Owning an Ariel is, let’s be honest, a considered choice. Famous for low depreciation, the ‘petrol-head maths’ needed to justify a purchase of an Atom, Nomad or Ace is often pretty straight forward. Until, that is, you start to factor in insurance costs. But if armed with a little bit of information, volunteered by your fellow Ariel owners, it is possible to find ways to make that petrol-head maths work more in your favour.
The Big Insurance Survey (conducted between in Jan and Feb 2025 polled 38 owners) provides us with the following results. The finding suggest that being a paid member of the club, having a tracker and limiting your mileage to 3000 is a good way to get the best value cover.
The most common Insurers are:
- Classic Line (8 customers)
- Howdens (6 customers)
- Adrian Flux (3 customers)
- MSM (3 customers)
- Reis (2 customers)
These are UK insurers, in the US, Rally and American Modern are the most popular.
The most expensive premium reported is £3500 (for a new owner of a 4 350 from Adrian Flux), but the average cost was £871.50, with a tracker and between 3-4000 miles annually. Not surprisingly newer owners with less experience tend to pay higher premiums.
The results show that we are a pretty distinct group of people – here are some common themes:

- Most owners are between 40-60 years old
- Track day coverage is often included, with costs around £55 per track day
- Club membership discounts are common and help reduce premiums – Classic Line for instance offers up to 15% club discount.
- Vehicle trackers are frequently used and may affect premiums
- Annual mileage is typically between 2000-4000 miles
- Location is predominantly UK-based, with a few USA customers
There is a strong correlation in the data between included track day insurance cover and the overall premium. It is worth remembering that some track day cover bundled with your road cover means that any claim will impact your road premiums (and may impact your no claims bonus) as the data will be shared with other insurers.

Insurance is a thing that some people think of as a ‘tax’, but of course, should the worst happen, then it becomes a benefit. As always, be careful out there and have Serious Fun.
