Indicator switch steering wheel button

Post by K20A2 » Sat Oct 18, 2014 2:50 pm

Hello,

I was not sure, whether it would had made sence to add this to the thread of Summit Technologies so I opened a new topic.

What I was wandering about a couple of times, when I was reading about the idea in this forum of having self cancelling indicators, was whether there might be the chance to add a kind of motorbike indicator swich to the steering wheel in a similar position like Summit Technologies did it on the Raptor board.

The button of the switches being used on motorbikes or scooters can be clicked to the left or right to make the indicators work at the same side, then it comes directly back to the neutral position and you cancel the indicators by pressing down the same button. (I hope this description is understandable for those who may not know these switches)

So admittedly it is no self cancelling function, but you have all functions on one button using only one thumb and no need to change hands position or to look to the switch and for the case you are not sure, whether you already cancelled the indicator (probably more related to bikes) you just press the button down (whenever and how often you may want to) and either it stops the indicator or it does nothing (like indicating again or to the other side e.g.).

Of course I unfortunately have no clue about the wiring problem, so it would probably be much easier for those who do not have a removable steering wheel to adapt the cables from the original indicator switch to such a kind of construction. But perhaps somebody else has an idea, how that could be solved for the removable steering wheels, e.g. by adding additional cable and connectors.

So just a thought...

Regards

The wireless buttons could be fully configured accordingly couldn't they?
They could be programmed for a 4 flash lane change (momentary push) or an on cycle (held for a second or two) but set for a 30 second turn off cycle.
Whatever happened to someone that designed one with the magnet sensor on the column to cancel the indicators - that seemed a good idea (hammt???)

Hello Stew,

I agree, from what I understood that should generally all be possible with the programmable board.
But what I am having in mind is a much easier thing and it would also only refer to the indicators.

The motorbike switches cost about 10-20 GBP depending on the type and execution.
Plus a bit of work for a kind of plate to fit it to the steering wheel and changing/adding/fixing cables you should have a useful indicator switch at your steering wheel.

Again, just a thought to perhaps inspire some people here ;)
I am not even an Atom owner (yet), but I was driving one not too long ago and I could imagine, that this probably not very complicated solution could perhaps add a lot of comfort.

Wouldnt a switch like that look a bit big and bulbous and out of place
something more aesthetically pleasing and in keeping with the car like this - falsely labeled NoZ ;)
Wiring is bound to cause the biggest hurdle.

If enough people are interested, I could order up another batch of self-cancelling indicators...

Search somewhere here for details...

I followed that link and it looks fantastic!

Was it ever put into production as the thread appears to stop dead in 2012??

Stew,

well... to be honest I have not thought about aesthetics yet and seeing the example in your link I suspect you may be right  ;)
This almost covers what I was looking for and I actually could take this as a basis for my idea of the switch.

Thanks and Regards

I tried a bit and this is what I mean.
Just a sample of course, made of plywood, which should probably not be the latest version ;)
I am not yet sure about the distance to the steering wheel diameter and whether it may hit the hand.
So I could perhaps adjust it a bit more to the middle of the steering wheel if necessary.
