New Nomad Owner - Hants/Sussex/Surrey border

Post by Mutley » Thu Aug 30, 2018 8:59 pm

Hi guys,

Hoping to pick up a used Nomad from Crewkerne HQ this Saturday so just putting a hand up here.

I am buying the yellow car Ariel took to Goodwood this summer. A little bit of browsing on this forum showed this car was originally specced and bought by @Stormcloud. So Stormcloud - please don't tell me that you raggged the ar**e of this car at a trackday every w/e ;D

Contacted my insurance co. yesterday and they are still scratching their heads so hope to get something sorted in time for my Sat. pick-up.

Yet to see a Nomad on the road, but hope there might be a couple in this neck of the woods and looking forward to belonging to the most exclusive automotive community in the UK!

Welcome,

That car is well known here on the forum, just do a wee search. It hasn’t been ragged, don’t worry..

My Nomad is on the Hants/ Surrey/ Sussex border, too. Whereabouts are you based?

Cheers,
Hedge

Congratulations; I looked at that at Goodwood and would have bought it if they had let me sit in it; which they refused. Good for you, irritated me!

That's a shame for sure, but I can also see their point. Even with the Atom which is easier to get in and out, it's very easy to leave shoe marks on. And as you can imagine requests to sit in come thick and fast. I realise from your other post you're not just after a photo, and for sure I'd offer up a seat in mine if I had one, but I can also see why they were a bit more picky.

Sorry to dissappoint madcal - as per phil4's reply - its a case of 'if we let one person sit in it, we have to let everyone sit in it'
so unfortunately a blanket 'No' is the best policy - particularly as it was not our car. It still belonged to the customer at the time.

WE would be very happy to receive you at the Factory if youd like to view a new, or we do have another Nomad up for sale - i just need to get the photos taken and get it up on our website.

FYI hte spec is:

235BHP 6 Speed

Heavy Duty Clutch including K20 Flywheel
Raised Air intake
Oil Cooler System (In Engine Bay)
Aluminium Radiator
Exhaust Guard Polished
Stainless Fittings to Brake Line and Clutch Line

Well the best of intentions and all that. . .

Insurance nightmare: I have a ‘family marque’ policy with REIS which insured my AMG C63 and covers my Ducati Panigale (just marginally less powerful than a n/a Nomad - somewhat better bhp/kg. . .), but since I spoke to them on Wednesday and mentioned the Nomad, they have gone into complete hiding. . .

Just off the phone to Aplan insurance whose under-writer won’t do it. I check all the boxes – 10 yrs+ no claims, right area, no convictions bla, bla – but they will only insure me if I had a year’s experience with driving the Nomad. . . Catch 22?

Grrrr. Any tips!

Hi, thing I'd try is calling Mary on 0115 965 1042, she's the REIS Specialist Vehicle Team Leader, really nice, and really good at getting me insured.

Chances are you've missed office opening hours, so I can now see the problem - I'd try the above tomorrow morning if you can, and see if they can give you the green light.

What a pain eh?

Seems like a nice spec. I did understand why but I am sure if there was a will there would have been a way, and there was a.... (sorry about to go all Ben Kingsley on you, no not Gandhi). Unfortunately I still need to sit in one before I travel 200 miles so hopefully someone has one near me and a friendly disposition.

Fingers crossed!

Hi Mutley - I am not a fan of REIS and eventually insured with A Plan. But I have had some 6 years of atom ownership. I always used to use Henderson Taylor but this time they were £300 ish more - but if you can’t sort it then give them a go. At least you will be insured.

Don’t be put off by the insurance mate.
I was with Mannings for my Porsche RS & had been for 9 years . They didn’t want to know .
So I called Pace Ward & they did both cars without question . I even have my 22 year old son on the policy who had no no claims ( not for the Porsche )
Think the 1sy year was about £1200, obviously would’ve been much less just for me.

Try NFU. They charge me £400 for my new Ferrari and £350 for a heavily modified Morgan 3 Wheeler (x2 power).

Hi guys,

Again - thanks for the suggestions. In the end REIS came good. Which is something of a relief as I would prefer to add it to my existing policy - which they will do - rather than start over with a new ploicy.

In fact - shout out for Ben on duty at REIS on a Saturday, who called my normal contact on her mobile (who wasn't on duty) and discovered that she had been emailed with the thumbs-up to add to my multi-car policy from the underwriters late on Friday. Unfortunately this was all too late to pick up the car.

So hoping do do a pick up some time this week which will be tricky due to work commitments - but I'm not sure I can wait another week ;D

Oh and Hedge - I live near Haslemere, once I have my Nomad we will have to have a beer and Swap notes.

Glad the hear the insurance is coming good Mutley.

I bought my Nomad new and the first time I actually drove one was on pick-up day, after an 11 month wait.

Granted, I was coming from previously owning an Atom 2 , 4 years before, bit still quite a leap of faith for the money.

I have first-hand experience that Henry and everyone else at Ariel go above and beyond to ensure we enjoy their cars. As you can see, the forum community is always willing to assist.

I'm 2 months / 2750 miles into Nomad ownership. Based near Reigate. Need to find an excuse for Hedge and I to see your new ride in the flesh. BTW - I will be demanding that I sit in it ;-)

Welcome aboard - I hope!
