Atom 3 engine oil amount

Post by Mattv6 » Thu Mar 13, 2014 9:53 pm

Hi there,

Did a search but couldn't find this sorry.

How much oil does the atom 3 take? Handbook on one page says 4.5litres but then on the next says 4.8litres??

Thanks,

Matt

Matt,

I suppose it depends on how much of the old you managed to drain and how high up the stick you like to be. I usually pop 4 in and then start stick checking as I add more. I like to aim for the higher of the two marks on the stick.

I've never needed more than a 5L can even when I had the sump off to clean and check baffles.

i refill about 1x 5 liter can, I think I once needed 5 liters and a bit, not sure if the engine mounting angle is a bit off compared to the atom 3 (i have a 2)

Sorry for the slight derail, but do the baffles in the sump get dirty/clogged up then? I thought they were just metal plates to stop the oil from sloshing all the way to one side on hard cornering/braking etc? Also, is it an engine out job? In which case I guess it wouldn't hurt to have a look at them whilst having a clutch change.

Hi TD,

I had the engine out but can be done in situ. Baffles just vertical plates with two little doors that open opposite ways.

Not aware of anyone having problems but I wanted to clean out any crud that might have built up, make sure doors were swinging free and the oil pickup filter was good.

Cheers for the pic :)

Is that a "factory" baffled sump? Are the "doors" hinged to only open one way? Wouldn't that mean the oil would get stuck once it goes through the "door" (if it acts like a non return valve?)? Interesting to see a pic, not what I imagined it would look like at all!

Cheers

Yep, that's factory. Not as industrial as some after-market for the k20a (see below) but much lighter. The doors hold the oil in the centre which is where the pickup is.

I suspect that I am being thick, but if the doors only open one way (towards the centre of the sump where the pick up is), how does the oil escape outside the centre (it can't pass back through the one way doors as they are effectively a non return valve)?

Unless the oil is returned to the "sides" of the sump after being picked up from the centre and pumped around the oil galleries etc?

Cheers :)

Lol, learn something new every day  ;D

Thanks again for the pics and info, and sorry to the OP for turning this thread into a baffled sump question and answer session  ;)

also notice the cutout on the right hand side (easier to spot on the after-market) the baffle doesn't completely block travel from left to right

not an easy job to do in situ
lots of things to undo/disconect
jacking up engine & pushing over to the left
4 hr to remove

4.5 w/o filter, 4.8 with as per my Honda book.  Funny, same book says 4.4 US Quarts w/o filter, and 4.6 US Qt. with.
