Duel spring setup on adjustable shocks - clattering

Post by meladdo » Mon Jul 22, 2013 2:32 pm

After fitting a windscreen kit to my car and driving without a lid - I can hear the spring clatter from front and rear suspension. The clatter looks to be coming from the two spring faces where they meet. Granted its only on poor roads - once you get on a good bit of road no clatter.

Anyone had a go at dampening this down - if so what did you use?

Now anyone with some other methods of reduction in this rattle / clatter

Sorry meladdo, was bored.
I seem to remember that back in the early Atom 2 days this was discussed at length. Ideas of plastic shims and rubber coating the springs were mentioned but I don't think anyone sorted the problem. I would also be interested in a good fix.

Dump the 'assister/tender' springs and get "helper" springs..

No Need for apologies Simon - was a good effort...... ;)

OK so I googled these Helper springs and saw lots of rubber / nylon collars that are put between the springs - Why dont mine have these rubber separators fitted as standard. I am convinced its the faces between springs and not the seat either end - but I could be wrong it may be ends too.....

Has anyone eliminated this clatter - or at least reduced it significantly ?

I would like to know how you tackled it  :tu:

You can add rubber semi circles around the spring to stop this completely but it will effect the ride height/geo a little, but for a road setup it actually feels a lot more compliant.

One of the first mods I did, no noise at all.

It's caused when the small length spring coils run out of extension when they are fully compressed and collide with each other. This then transfers all the compression into the larger spring. All by design and as nature intended - it is very irritating I agree ..

Let's not start another lengthy debate as to whether it's a 'helper' or a 'tender' spring  ;D

It might lead to a duel  ;)

I'll take some pics tomorrow.

You can buy rubber spring silencers but most of the ones I found were way to thick.

I cured all my suspension noise for good with the following:

thread 1
thread 2

Took some effort, but was worth it.

Thanks Lane. I sold my A2 before you found the fix so missed all the info first time round. Good work.
Are the suspensions mods still working well?

This was my solution, circular rubber on the springs.

Yes, my car is rattle and squeak free 99.9% of the time.  What I did has worked very well.

A few questions ChuckUK -

Did you have to dismantle the suspension to install these?
Did you make them from rubber sheeting or buy of the shelf a part and adapt?

Thanks :tu:

I appreciate all the replies - some very detailed! I cant see any issues as detailed in some of the older posts and threads linked too - my car is a 3.5 and I am sure the only noise is coming from the slap of the red spring on the black and more so the clatter of the red spring hitting itself in normal operation

I think ChukUK's remedy is what is required as a first step.
