Rear Alcon upgrade

Post by dreamscape » Fri Dec 18, 2015 11:37 am

I intend shortly to upgrade my 2006 AA2 300 with Alcons on the rear & the handbrake kit. I wonder whether I can use the standard uprights, or is it also required to replace them???

There were plenty of Atom 2 300s with rear Alcons and handbrake kits.

The uprated rear uprights didn't appear until after the Atom 3 was released, so that should be OK.

It'll be more ££ but may be worth going for the new uprights with the stronger Porsche bearings if you're going to the trouble of stripping the hubs down?

Thanks John!
I don´t drive the Atom on the track and had no issues with the standard bearings in 6 years of ownership.
But it´s on my wish list in addition to NRBC, rear Alcons, etc. :-)

I have a 2005 AA2 300 and the uprights it had when I acquired it didn't have the forward mounts required for a handbrake caliper (it does now)

I don't really understand why you'd want Alcons on the rear (assuming you've already got them on the front) if you're not going on track. I had Alcons Front/Sport rear on my old 2,300 and never felt it needed the upgrade on the road once.

I appreciate we all want different things but maybe you could save the money and spend it on beer instead??

Cheers,
Stu

Well, I would totally agree with you, if did not test drive an Atom with Alcons all around - night and day compared to mine.
Though I´m not sure how much effect the 225 & 255 tyres had additionally?!
Thanks anyway for your beer suggestion ;-)

Hi Tobi,

I see you are still actively modding your car, good for you. Are you sure your brake bias is set up correctly?
My Atom 2 had the Alcons front and standard/sport set rear, with the brakebias almost all the way to the rear, it braked best and very firm, I never owned a car braking as hard as this.

BUT, my car had the bigger main braking pumps (behind the pedal, can't remember the correct word now) on the rear aswell as the front, better is to have the original on the rear and the bigger one on the front for the Alcons, this way you can move the bias back to the front a bit and still have equally hard braking on the rear.

If you have the big ones on both the rear and front, than you have a big improvement possibility left for little money!

Does your car have AD08's or AO48.  I think you will get a better improvement in braking with stickier tyres, than you will get from rear Alcons.  Alcons dont improve your stopping power.  Standard brakes can lock the wheels.  Its the tyre loosing grip (therefore locking) that is the limiting factor.  Alcons are an improvement, they will give you a more progressive feel, but without sticky rubber, I think rear Alcons will be wasted.  I think the upgrade is 2.5k ish.  New sticky tyres, maybe £600.  Worth a try.
