Re: Cumbria is a long way but......
Hi all, and especially those coming to Cumbria weekend after next.
The 2 week forecast currently looks good, but I would still bring your waterproof onesies just in case. It is Cumbria after all.
We seem to be a party of 9/10 Atoms. Cumbria won't have seen this many before!

Adrian has kindly offered to put together ITN files, so I thought I would outline in more detail what I think will be a good couple of days out. Also so those coming can have a scan at the map at what is proposed.
Saturday - East Cumbria : main characteristic driving roads rather than a dose of "Lakeland"
From hotel, A6 Kendal to Penrith
A686 Penrith to Alston - stop at Hartside Moor cafe after about 1 hour. Great views.
A689 Alston to Brampton
Brampton B6413 to Lazonby then B6412 towards Penrith. A 686 back to Penrith
A66 West until pick up A592 to Windermere over Kirkstone Pass via Ullswater.
A591 for short while then A5074 - lunch stop at Lakeland, junction of A591/5074 and by the train station. About 2 hours to here from Hartside Cafe.
After, A5074 from Windermere, via Winster, to A590.
Join A590 to M6 where pick up the A65 to Kirkby Lonsdale.
A683 Kirkby Lonsdale to Sedbergh
A684 back to Kendal.
Around 1hr 30 from Windermere so total of 4.5 hours driving so far.
If weather and fitness are good, an hour's extension to the above would be
A683 beyond Sedbergh to Ravenstonedale.
A685 to Tebay and A685 back to Kendal
Sunday - West Cumbria : more "Lakeland" - A roads with passing places! - but there will still be plenty of good driving road
From hotel, A591 to Windermere
Take A5074 then A592 to Newby Bridge
Follow A590 to Greenodd
Right onto A5092 to Grizebeck then A595 via Foxfield to Silecroft.
Make our way on the A595 up the West Coast
Find B5345 to St Bees: this takes around 2 hours to here.
Beach cafe for coffee or lunch dependent on start time
From St Bees go to Egremont and pick up A595 to Gosforth
Into the fells from Gosforth - Santon- Eskdale Green- Birker Fell - Ulpha - Duddon Bridge
Pick up A595 to Broughton
Then A593 through Coniston to Ambleside. This takes about 1hr 30mins
Lunch or coffee in Ambleside, suggest Hays Garden Centre.
Then take A591 from Ambleside to Keswick, picking up A5271 and A5289 through Keswick
Here small stretch of A66 to Braithwaite then B5292 Whinlatter Pass to Lorton. Continue on B5292 to Cockermouth
A5986 through Cockermouth and join A595 towards Carlisle
Take A591 to Keswick.
Then A66 and A591 back to Kendal
Around 2.5 hrs
This would make around 6 hours in the car
Again according to weather and fitness, we could do the A592 Kirkstone Pass again back to the hotel.
All of this can be modified according to weather and speed we achieve on the road.
I hope this makes sense. Perhaps those attending can confirm dates / arrival times at Castle Green hotel. And of course, if there are any local Atoms that want to come along, give us a shout.
Look forward to questions and to meeting everyone
All the best
Mark

Re: Cumbria is a long way but......
Daz, have done that route from the factory a couple of times. Brilliant.
Andrew, with pleasure although will be in transit home myself to fetch the Atom Saturday morning.
Main reason for this post is to advise that Kezzie has produced a detailed route and ITN files. If you PM him he can get them out to you.
Thanks Adrian

Re: Cumbria is a long way but......
Hi Guys,
I am coming up from Oxford on Friday and not sure which route to take? Not in a massive rush but have only travelled before up the M40 etc. so not sure of any scenic routes that are worth taking?
Any ideas or is there somewhere to meet anyone along the way, don't mind a detour.
If not I will see you all sometime in the afternoon, is it DJ's or T-shirt/shirt and jeans type of place for evening dinner, don't want to be under/over dressed and let the club down
Michael

Re: Cumbria is a long way but......
Bummer the weather looks to be getting wet!!!! might have to come in the amg gota keep the wife happy !!!!
Re: Cumbria is a long way but......
Friday is looking damp am afraid. Saturday and Sunday, though, predicted dry and getting warmer through the weekend.
The hotel is a nice one Michael so probably not flip flops but when I went there didn't strike me as a dress for dinner type of place.
Route wise, if you can get across to Wales, via Newtown, there are fewer better roads. Long way round though. The other tempter would be to get North of Leeds, via Peak District maybe, then go across country from the A1. Some good roads there too.
As I said in the title of the thread, it is a long way! But if its dry over the 2 days, Job's a Good One.
See you on Friday

So far only PaulP has asked me for the ITN files.
If anyone would like them can you drop me a PM with your email address and I'll send them out before Friday.
