Island Raid (Atoms and Boats)

Post by Winmoz » Mon Dec 27, 2021 5:23 pm

Update.
POSTPONED - will propose some dates later.

Now expanded to 2 boats 11 seats available.

Newbury to Hythe Marina, to Cowes for lunch and back again.

New details here:

Update and venue change. Having spoken to my boat club, they are excited to host a session for us. They will lay on an extra boat (with a skipper) so we will have one RIB (6 people) and one Bayliner (8people).
We will depart from Hythe Marina where parking will be provided and head over to Cowes on the Isle of Wight for a spot of lunch before heading back to Hythe.

Plan is to have a little drive down early in the morning from Newbury, aiming to get to the boats for around 9:30am.

Looking at dates 6th July or 8th July or 15th July are options.

So we have 11 spaces available. Let me know if you fancy it and which date you’d prefer.

Let me know if you are interested

Oh my, I used to have a small rib with a 60hp Mercury that was brilliant for getting airborne off the wake of large boats. Ending up sinking it on Southampton Water in a storm.
Love to join in.
Choose who you wish to join you, it's a mates kind of trip I think.

During my many years of sailing the Folly Inn (Whippingham) which is about 15 mins (legal speed) on the East bank further up the Medina River - it has it's own mooring pontoon which is free if visiting the Inn - it's located a couple of miles south of Cowes itself and always did a pretty good lunch/dinner and they also used to stock a reasonable range of beers.

In Cowes town itself the Red Duster restaurant on the High Street always used to serve pretty good food.

We always found that the food served in most of the pubs in Cowes was generally PBA and almost always overpriced!

However the caveat to the above is that I sold my yacht in 2012 so things may have markedly changed since then?

Yes the Folly In is still a good bet, but the pootle up the river can feel long after a high speed crossing.

Still room for a couple more, so if you fancy it let us know!

My sailing boat went up the river at about the same speed it crossed the Solent at from it's Hamble River mooring! ;D

However I occasionally scooted down the river rather faster (and illegally) inside the nooring trots to Cowes for supplies (groceries and newspaper) in my 2.4m rib with 10hp on the back! ???

Hi Guys I’m based in Old Portsmouth, looking out at the harbour entrance, so I’d be up for this if you still have space, you can use my place as a rest spot, toilet/ coffee etc. 👍

:tu: Nice offer Steve

One concern for me is where can we park our cars securely and leave them for a number of hours??

There is parking by the side of the clubhouse and there is always a member of staff on duty, plus the quayside is gated and patrolled. I’ve left my car there all day before.

Welcome aboard shipmate! There’s coffee, tea and toilets at the clubhouse (although it is more of a portacabin with a kitchen). So we should be good. Will update the list and start looking at some dates.
