A cool trick with WhatsApp if you are on a car run and get split up

So I was chatting with [mention]simonrhart[/mention] the other day about how it is sometimes much fun to try and keep a convoy of cars together.

You know the score... 4 of the cars get past the tractor, but the last 3 get left behind. Or Jeff takes a wrong turn at the 'unplanned' roadworks and he's the one with the jam sandwiches so you can't exactly shoot off and leave him - that kind of thing.

Anywho...

I was enlightened to see how you can use WhatsApp to temporarily share your location - in real time - should Jeff try to run off with the jam sandwiches or if Jeff realises he is lost and wants to find out where the pack is.

We've yet to test it in the real world but it looks promising, so thought I would share here in case it helps others.

Watching Jeff get lost - regularly - and others waiting in a layby trying to call him to work out where he is.

Honestly, I've been on quite a few car runs and I've never seen real-time tracking being used. But have seen the group split up many times...

I'm in another car club with my R35 GTR,
They make good use of WhatsApp.
Set up a chat for the meet/tour and all participants go live location and map shows you where everyone is in real-time and will even give you a route to any one of them.

Yeah, but don't you have to be set up as linked Accounts or something on Google?

Anywho, the group got split up today and the live tracking stuff worked very well. All jam sandwiches fully accounted for

To use Google as a live location sharing system, you need people in your contacts list with their corresponding Google accounts. If you do not have this it is a little combersome in that you share a link with people a d this does'nt work that well when you have a big group.

So it is similar to WhatsApp in that with whats app it uses peoples phone numbers but with Google it uses Google accounts. WhatsApp overall is more feature rich because it has IM, photo sharing video sharing, calling capabilities, Google does not.
