Welcome to the New Forum

Post by Alex Brandon-Smith » Fri Dec 22, 2017 12:05 pm

Ladies and gents, it's finally been done...the new forum is up and running!

We have spent a fair bit of time and effort to pull over the old forum so most settings and chats should remain the same as they were. We are still working on the new look of it but at least it's all working.

The new forum is Tapatalk enabled too so there's no excuse not to catch up with the latest news, views and events on your mobile (Bod)! One change of note is that the more technical areas of the forum (like track atom) have been locked down for membership use only. This type of data is the forum's biggest asset and, as such, it should be encouraged to become a member to access these more in-depth areas of the forum.

Obviously, there will be some teething issues. One we know of is that in the data transfer, all the old "quoted" texts have now changed to include the works "x quoted this" but as the new forum is used those posts will slowly drop off.

All forums can be individually subscribed to and the quickest way of finding out about unread posts is via the Quick Links button on the top left of the forum.

Any problems, let us know, else enjoy and let's continue to help keep the club ticking over with news, events etc.

Happy Christmas everyone. Roll on a new driving year!

Alex

To be honest, we are still working out certain items Graeme. Are you looking to change the symbol on your posts for example?

no nothing urgent Alex. Just the symbols to the right of each board and topic. You can't immediately see if there are new posts like on the old forum or am I missing something? Still looking around, it looks great

You should see a "last post" as the rightmost column of any forum, which hopefully shows you if there's something new to read.

If you click on quick links, you can see if there are any unread posts also...

Tapatalk is also quite useful as you can just go to the unread posts area. Worth a try...

Finally, if you mark all the forums read... for example.... the icon on the left of each forum will be blue (and if you hover over, say "no unread posts", and go to a red outline (and say "unread posts") if there are posts you've not read.

Hi guys !

I can't read my new PMs as they are On Hold as the storage buffer is set to 50 messages. I have quite a few more in there!

Has the 'un-read posts' since last login gone?

Alex

I was unable to attach a .pdf to a post - I got the warning message : (File type not allowed).

- is this a deliberate forum policy or an oversight?

I've also,as yet, had no feedback or reply from a forum moderator in response to my post (02/01/2018) re being unable to attach a .pdf file to a post!

As an aside (while I freely acknowledge that a considerable amount of work has obviously been put into getting the new bulletin board up and running), I don't know if it is just me, but I find that I have come to the rather unexpected conclusion that this new phpBB bulletin board version is considerably less instinctive to use than the previous version - it really doesn't seem to provide anything really worthwhile extra to what was in in the previous version other than a marginally different layout and a considerably more awkward menuing system!

The insertion/handling of internet links is still very poor with no discernable improvement over the previous phpBB version and the private message function is without doubt much less user friendly than before. The Compuserve BA forum that I built in 1997 and ran for 4800 aircrew until I retired in 2003 had much better text handling than this phpBB software version 15 or more years ago!

My remarks above relate entirely to the quality of the phpBB software - the shortcomings of which, I suspect, makes for a rather diffifult life for the moderators with the uneviable task of grappling with the somewhat poor quality phpBB software and also running this bulletin board on the members' behalf!
