In how many countries is the Atom 'road legal'?

Post by Shinigami » Wed Jan 17, 2007 2:19 pm

So far, I've heard of it being road legal in the UK, Belgium, New Zealand and in some states (such as California).

Can anyone append to this list? I'd like to know if any other countries now let you register an Atom for normal road driving?

Cheers :)

I thought we've had Atom Owners that have posted their driving experiences in their home countries of Switzerland, Australia, France and United Emirates as well. Was the one in Japan just a track toy or was he using it on the street as well? The United States has it's fair share and the UK have many Atoms on the road at this point.

So to me the list would look like:

Australia
Belgium
Canada
Dubai
England
France
New Zealand
United States

Rumored being there are at least 3 in the UAE, and another Atom spotted in Northern Cyprus as well.

Hmm... If you're separating England, then you need to add Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland as well.

I can't say for sure, but you might also include the Channel Islands

Probably best just to put UK...

There's at least one road legal car in Germany. More info available here. There's a picture of the car with the German licence plate on it.

This car was previosuly registerd in Belgium. The Belgian registration ironed out a few issues in Germany and obviously was of big help.
OBDII was originally missing but is now attached. A break calculation check/expertise was required as well as a noise level expertise.
The license plate on the bonnet is a once off special admission by the TÃ?VDEKRA in Zwickau.

It is not a general admission and any further car would need to go through a new cylce.

edited to correct TÃ?V to DEKRA

The dealer in Sweden claims it's road legal in Sweden. Maybe Andreas (Swede300) can enlighten us in near future.

Klaus : are you sure that it's not a temporary "garage" plate in Germany ? I'm not sure that an atom has been definitively registered there .

Monza: Already some time ago I have talked to the owner as well as to the guy who actually did the checks during the registration process in Zwickau - all of that with my upcoming process in Austria in mind (turned out that the registration in Germany would be of no help in Austria though).

The information I have posted was independently confirmed by both guys. There was one small error in my recent post however: It was not the TÃ?V but rather the DEKRA, but still in Zwickau - will modify that in a minute. BTW I still do have contact details for the DEKRA guy on file.

One thing to note however is: The next one will probably be no easier to register due to EURO 4 now out. And it was not a type approval but a sort of German SVA. Also I don't know how other engine options would work out (if I remember correctly this car uses a 245bhp version).

Sorry didn't mean to tick off the other people in the "UK". My bad. :)

So the list for Shinigami, if I have it right looks something like this:

Australia
Belgium
Canada
Dubai (UAE?)
France
Germany
New Zealand
Norway
Sweden
United Kingdom
United States

And at least one in China or Japan at a track.

I thought we've had several posts that had Australian Atoms already on the road there.

AFAIK Technically a road going Atom could be possible currently under certain areas of our import laws, however you would have to be living in the country where you purchase the Atom, own it and stay with it for at least 12 consecutive months(go on a holiday somewhere away from the Atom and you're no longer applicable), then return to australia and apply to have it imported. Then if the powers that be see fit, you'd be able to drive the atom on the road. So far I havn't heard of anyone whose gone to that much trouble :)
