The information you give is unfortunately not good.
The car need to be registered in the country where it stays more than 6 months/year.
Generaly the Police will not create problem with this, but customs services can and more important, in case of crash with high cost damage (cars an human) you can be sure that the insurance will not pay you. Unfortunately, we have an example in France with this case.
Last point : it's more and more difficult for a french man (for example) to find an insurance for a car with UK plates, for a long period (more than 6 months).

France : about 40 Atom are road legal but it's now impossible to register new ones (because of Euro5).

Is it possible to register a used uk one? or even in that case it would need to comply with Euro 5?

I am sure you are right. But still it can be an option. Speaking of insurance: I have only a third party insurance right from the begining (full insurance would cost me 10% of car's price every year), so in case of crash (when it'd be my fault) I will get nothing. So, in my case the question of insurance would not be a case.  ^-^

You can add Italy too!  :)

Mine is a used car (approved in the 2011), but I think you can buy a new car no Euro5.
The Italian dealer is still alive ... so I think they can sell the new Atom cars.

Otherwise, you can use an different way ... there are some companies (from Germany for example) that can "rent" the car to you. So, you can drive in all EU countries for more that 6 months. I have a friend that has chosen this way for his Audi (and you spend less money, because in Italy there are too much tax, in particular if you have a lot od KWs ...  :( ).

JP, could you please explain the difficulties, since I don´t see why a AA3 approved before 2011 and obviously meeting the EURO 4  standards, should be of a problem in terms of registration??

There's also one in Estonia as of about a month ago. You can definitely register Atoms that were manufactured before 01.01.2011 and have Euro4 papers.

Mine is a yellow one that was previously owned by a Stephen C. W. in England and was rebuilt to LHD at my request. The leads to figure out how to register it came largely through members of this forum - thank you all! The car registry dept in Estonia was also very helpful to figure out what the requirements were and were very quick to do the actual registration once I had my papers in order.

List updated (incl Osky's note about Italy).
