Can anyone pin it down on a map? Next year's Nurburgring trip could get extended to include a few extra miles (!) and a visit here.

If I am not mistaken Stilfser Joch is in Italy close to the Swiss border and south of Austria. The red arrow on the attached map should give you an idea where it is located.

I doubt that - that's a considerable distance.

You're probably right as this is the route between them:-

That's another picture of the same road up to Stilfser Joch. It actually shows how long the drive really is. Its a total of 48 corners.
[/quote]

The Atom corners exceptionally well, but I don't think I'd be willing to try some of those corners at 100 mph!  Suddenly I'm reminded again about how beautiful Europe is.

There's actually a glimpse of the Stilfser Joch road, as well as an Atom, in this vid (which was related to the vid link that Stephanie Plum posted in the 'Song Title' thread):-

I was being sarcastic. I have no idea how far it is, but doubt it is more than a good day's drive away.

The one way distance would probably be in the area of between 700 and 800 km. And I am not sarcastic here ... ;)

In the directions I've tried to link to above it gives:-

762 km (about 7 hours 56 mins), which is about 474 miles.

***EDIT***

I think I've worked out the correct link now:-

... and that route even goes through my town of birth where my parents still live (albeit passing by on the Autobahn A14, not through the centre of town).

I however would not drive through the Arlbergtunnel (that's where it says "partial toll road") but would rather drive over the ArlbergpaÃ? as a sort of test run for Stilfser Joch. That road is also pretty nice in a quick sports car. And you save the toll.

It is also worth mentioning that for driving on Austrian Autobahns (i.e. highways) you require a toll sticker on the car.

It's still France - by miles (or should that be kiometres?)

Drove through Spain in the last few weeks, and their roads are appalling! Not so much for the surfaces, but the traffic! There doesn't appear to be much rail freight, so it all goes on the road, and in a country with a booming economy that means a LOT of trucks - probably 1:1 with cars on the road.

On the other hand, a country in the economic toilet, like France, has MUCH better roads - less traffic, less freight and great surfaces - especially with the 'avoid motorways' button pressed on the tomtom.

Every time I cross La Manche, I am impressed by French roads. Can't wait for August and the Euro Atom tour!
