Anyone have LED whips - need photos!

Post by RigidCollosion » Sun Mar 22, 2020 1:25 pm

Hi, Anyone have LED whips fitted? I have a pair of orange ones here and I need some pics of the bases to see how other people/factory fit them. Any practical experience appreciated before I drill holes. Mine are by UTV products but I have a feeling the bases may be too wide a circumference to allow a fit in the pre-welded brackets and still clear the engine cover.

Thanks.

As in like that?

If so, don’t forget some support a little further up:

Ah, thanks for that. Always good to see an install before embarking on a project.

Questions:
Is that a washer between the plastic engine cover and the whip base?
Where did you get that support bracket?

Kind regards

Hi,

Hope it helps a bit, but in answer to both questions... I’ve no idea, that’s how it arrived from the factory :)

Hi, Thanks for the photos.
I modified the engine cover with 2 x slots to allow the cover to be removed without removing the whip bases (and wiring loom). I will be posting a full set of instructions in the not too distant future when I have the full installation complete.
I am currently waiting for some extra bits from China in order to do a really slick job. The biggest challenge is finding good quality stainless mounting hardware. As far as I can see most of the aftermarket LED whip poles have bases machined from aluminium and as a result the thread sizes used are M12 x 1.25mm pitch (as the aluminium is soft you would never use a coarse thread). My whips came with standard steel nuts, washers and lock washers which are NOT going on my Nomad. Sourcing stainless is easy(ish) on ebay if you stick to half or full nuts. I want to use extra long nuts (you will see why when I publish my project details). Finding long stainless nuts in M12 is easy. Try finding them in 1.25mm pitch though and I am very limited in options. Amazingly the only two places on the planet showing anything like what I want are a factory in China and a metric thread specialist in the US. Quite ironic really that we live in the 'metric capital of the world' and yet I have to source metric hardware from the other side of the planet. Anyway, watch this space.
