Raised Air Intake

Post by 77_TYX » Thu Mar 07, 2019 10:35 am

Is it just for higher wading depth, through deep water, or does it provide any additional flow rate to the standard air box?

Does anyone have the ITG Aluminium Air Box? Again, any benefit in flow rate and induction roar?

It's mainly to keep dirt out of the intake system from what I understand.

The 3 options are:
 • Exposed air filter - The foam filter just sits in the engine bay and needs cleaning quite regularly if you kick up wet and dirt.
 • Snorkel -Keeps dirt even further away from the air filter meaning you can go stronger for longer. All the electrics are approximately waist-height when you are sitting in the car, so even if you have an air intake snorkel for the engine that sits 2 feet above your head, if the electrics don't die before you drown (unless you have a snorkel as well of course), the car snorkel is mainly for show with a side helping of keeping the air filter cleaner.
I recently added the aluminium box to the exposed air filter. I can't tell any difference on flow rate or induction noise (it's still just as loud), but I now only have a very small area of air filter exposed to the filth that gets under the engine bay.

777_TYK. -It's actually for none of those...

It ducts clean air into the air intake, to further prevent (over the aluminium air box) dirt and water ingress in very muddy, / wet or very dusty conditions.

The cars (regardless of air box, or raised intake) have the same filter attached so air flow rate is the same.

The standard filter is in the engine bay and will filter mud, dust etc, for a limited time. Once it is saturated, water / dust can get through.
After a days 'off roading' you will need to remove, clean and re oil the filter. (Cleaner and oil is available from us here at Ariel, or from the ITG website).

The aluminium air box protect the filter, but the air is still drawn from inside the engine bay. This increases the time period you can spend in your 'mucky' environment.

The raised intake increases this time period further. It doesn't remove the need for cleaning, but vastly reduces it.

thank you both for your detailed/speedy replies.

Henry, is the raised snorkel something that can be ordered/fitted easily?

Hi Henry - interested in this - how much faff is it ? Much cutting or just a bit fiddly ?

I'll be honest.

Its quite faffy.

It involves cutting a large hole in the rear body work...

For my use, it will value more for looks than the routing of dust/water/mud free air.

If it was something the factory would do, Henry, what would it cost?

For UK pricing purposes: (taxes etc may differ!)

£463.23+VAT, plus 2 hrs labour. It includes the Aluminium air box. (but its a different Aluminium air box, unfortunately)

Trigger - it was after our tour down horse-piss alley last year that made me go for the aluminium air box. My air filter was caked after that little outing!

The Ally air box isnt too bad.

cover off

airbox inc filter on,

cover on

done...

no cutting etc.

getting the cover off isnt hugely simple, you need to flex it between the chassis rails at the back... put some duck tape (a few layers) over the chassis to protect it....

dont forget to remove the coolant bottle from the cover before you try and take it off. It twists and get posted through its own hole, if you see what i mean?

£215+VAT.
