Taking Your Ariel to its Birth Place

Post by IanG » Thu Feb 09, 2023 6:44 pm

Just getting a idea on if anyone is interested.

We have a chance of going to the Birth place of the Atom & Nomad.

A factory tour of Arch Motors in Huntingdon.
For those that don't know Arch make the Frames and a few other bits for Ariel.

Arch Motor and Manufacturing Co Ltd (known throughout the world as “Arch Motors”) was founded in 1958 by sidecar racers Bob Robinson, Ted and Alan Young. For the first eight years the company traded under a railway “Arch” in Tottenham, North London before moving to Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire in 1966.

Early customers, Lola, came to Arch Motors for their Lola Mk1 sports racing chassis, with Lola and Arch Motors pioneering the method of gas bronze welding space frames.

Lotus were also amongst the first customers with Lotus Development engineer and college friend Don Gadd introducing Colin Chapman to the fledgling company. Small components, such as pedals and wishbones were produced, leading on to Formula Junior chassis like the Lotus 22, the sports racer Lotus 23B and Lotus 24 F1 chassis was well as wishbones and rollover bars for the Lotus 25. Later chassis for Lotus include Lotus 31, 41, 51, 59 and 61. Formula Ford 69, 69 F3, 69 F2 and parts for Lotus 49 and 72 F1 cars.

Other highlights include:

Chassis for McLaren, Brabham, March, Ralt, Royale, Van Diemen and many others. Many components for the Ford GT40 and Ford advanced vehicles The Ford RS200 chassis was another very notable addition to an illustrious list

The plan will be a morning tour on a Saturday then find some road's for a blast around.

The date will be confirmed soon
