Sunday run out from Winchester - JULY 22nd 2018

Post by bodnet » Fri Jun 29, 2018 10:02 pm

Hi everyone

I’m thinking of (finally getting round to) arranging a Sunday morning run out over some of my favourite roads! Starting from Winchester, over to Devizes, back to Newbury.

If you want to check out the route on a map, starting at Winchester (easily accessible from the M3 and A34), then heading up to Wherwell on an awesome road, quick nip two junctions along the A303 around Andover, then up to Ludgershall, then another amazing road across the edge of Salisbury Plain to Upavon, then on to Devizes for a break. The return route heading out through Rowde to get to Calne and the beginning of the best section of the A4 - I think it was 3 lane when it was the pre-M4 trunk road, now it’s a delightfully wide, open, flowing road with easy overtaking!

Each leg (Winchester-Devizes, Devizes-Newbury) is just over 40 miles; google says around an hour but I think probably less ;) General plan is breakfast at Winchester, tea in Devizes and lunch in Newbury unless people just want to head off home. I’ll be starting from Bristol so basically doing the route twice, oh what a hardship! Image Timings as yet unclear, depends mostly on what I find for breakfast in Winchester; early enough to avoid the traffic (not that there’s much) but late enough to have a decent start time!

Finally, dates. 22 July is best for me but 5 August is also do-able; after that my next free Sunday is 9 September!! Image

So: vote for dates in the comments; the date with the most participants wins!

Breakfast suggestions at Winchester also welcome ;)

Hi Bod. That looks good. I’m not that far from Winchester. Some great roads, if they traffic free. I have things on those dates but they are still fluid. If I can make it I will join you.

I'm certainly interested depending on the date that's finally settled on.

Bod

I have eaten breakfast at the Forte Kitchen in Winchester a few times - but not for a few years - but when I just checked with my cousin and her husband (who live close by) it still seems to be going strong!

Food quality was always pretty good and venue is pretty couth - if a touche pricier than the usual local 'greasy spoon'!

Open hours - Open 7 days a week
Sunday 9am - 4pm - Breakfast daily until 11am

However I only ever had one car to park - you would need to check for suitable parking should a sizeable 'molecule' sign up!

I can make the 22nd. I can't stay late though.

Interested in the timing when clear.

Hi Bod

Is this still on?

Re breakfast, there are plenty of good places for that in Winchester, but problem is parking.

Theres a pub I visit occasionally near Winchester which may be suitable for breakfast meet? I suggest it because....

1. The foods normally quite good (although Ive never had breakfast there)
2. They advertise a breakfast menu (which is unusual for a rural pub). I suspect we would need to pre arrange if you wanted to go there
3. They have rooms if some of the further away people would like to stay the night before
4. Some nice roads also around there
5. its reasonably close to winchester, which we could drive through on our way to your route
6. plenty of secure parking for Atoms & Nomads

Its this place------> https://www.thewoolpackinn.co.uk

just a suggestion

Yes, still on, I’ve written up most of the route but unfortunately didn’t get chance to finish it today as planned.

I’ll check out that pub tomorrow morning; failing that my back-up plan is starting at a 24 hour shell garage so at least there’s facilities, food and hot drink available before we set off.

Digger - you know these roads better than I do - I was thinking 9-9.30 start from Winchester, would that be ok traffic-wise do you think?

Bod :)

Could a mod please edit the thread title to include the date? I don’t seem to be able to do it from Tapatalk.
