"You have bought an unforgettable car. Now do the unforgettable trip". The brief remains the same for 2018.

We have now completed the outline route and overnight stops for Italia 2018

The route

I will describe the routes below, but detailed maps of the routings will be on Myrouteapp.com. This is where we put the sat nav files. If you haven't already registered on this site (it's free), then please do so, and request access to the Ariel Club Tours group. I will then add you. You will then see a folder for each tour past and future. Within each folder folder will be route files for each day. The route is displayed as a normal Google Maps route. I will be copying over the Italy 2018 routes by tomorrow. Some of them are complete, others are draft and will be fine tuned right up until we leave in August. The route is based on research, experience from past club tours to the region, and some local knowledge.

It will take us across three countries: France, Switzerland and Italy. We will drive on some of Europe's, no, the world's, greatest and most scenic driving roads. Glorious French countryside, famous Swiss alpine passes, the Italian lakes, Tuscany, the French and Italian Riviera, parts of the Mille Miglia and Route Haute Alpes. Not to mention to two famous car factories: Ferrari and Lamborgini. More details below.

Channel crossings

These are the ones we going for:
Saturday 25 August, 09.36 – Folkestone to Calais
Saturday 8 September, 16.50 – Calais to Folkestone

Hotel accommodation

As I said in another post this has been very difficult, given the high season, and finding appropriate hotels to park Atoms. I list the hotels I have booked at for each stop. Some of these have plenty of space, some very limited, or maybe none by now. So if you are going on this trip, or even part of it, book up ASAP. If the hotel is full or the reasonably priced rooms have gone, there will be others close by. It's just a place to sleep, we can still meet up for meals etc. Hotel details in the itinerary below. I do have a more convenient (to read) spreadsheet with all these hotel details. If you want this, PM me with your email address. All the hotels range from about £50 to £150 a night, averaging at about £100.

ITINERARY

Day 1 - Saturday 25 August

ROUTE: after crossing the tunnel on the 09.36 service above, we have a long and relatively boring motorway trip down the A26 motorway to Troyes in France. Not a great day 1 but we have a long way to go, but the good news is the roads rapidly improve for the rest of the trip. 246 miles (from Calais) and 3.5 hours driving. We will stop somewhere for a nice, leisurely lunch.

HOTEL: Kyriad Troyes centre
Trip Advisor > https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... d_Est.html
Hotel site > https://www.kyriad.com/fr/hotels/kyriad ... ign=Kyriad
When you book here, request underground car parking space.

Day 2 - Sunday 26 August

ROUTE: Today we leave the motorway and travel through rural France to just outside the Swiss border near Neuchatel. I have plotted a motorway route as well if people want the more direct (boring :-) route). We stop at a little village called Fournet Blancheroche. 202 miles, 5 hours.

HOTEL: Chambres Hotes L'authentique
Hotel site (you need to book direct) > http://www.chambres-hotes-lauthentique.com
They only have five rooms so some may have to book other B&Bs in the area if we require more than five rooms.

Day 3 - Monday 27 August

ROUTE: Cross over into Switzerland, drive down to Neuchatel, then along the lake up to and around Berne, then down to Thun and the lakes. We will stop at Interlaken. This is a short morning only drive only 91 miles and 3 hours. This is because of the previous two long days driving so some can rest in Interlaken if you want. But you don't want to do that do you? ;D We have an optional afternoon drive up the Grimsel Pass, Furka Pass, Susten Pass and back to the hotel in Interlaken. Approx 80 miles. I can't get exact mileage as MYrouteapp won't allow it because the passes are closed for winter. Can't seem to tell it I'm doing it in summer. I will update the route when the passes open.

HOTEL: Alphorn
Trip Advisor > https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... _Bern.html
Hotel site > https://www.hotel-alphorn.ch/en

Day 4 - Tuesday 28 August

ROUTE: Drive from Interlaken along the lakes in central Switzerland and up over the Klausen Pass down to Glarus and around to Davos where we will spend the night. 164 miles, 5 hours.

HOTEL: Arabella Hotel Waldhuus, Davos
Trip Advisor > https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... _Alps.html
Hotel site > http://www.waldhuusdavos.ch/en

Day 5 - Wednesday 29 August

ROUTE: Take the road up to the Italian border at Stelvio, then down the western part of the Stelvio pass, over Gavia pass in the Italian Alps and down to Riva del Garda at the top of Lake Garda. Again I can't give exact mileage as the app shows alpine passes as closed, but it's approx 160 miles and 5 hours.

HOTEL: Hotel Luise
Trip Advisor > https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... Adige.html
Hotel site > http://www.hotelluise.com

Day 6 - Thursday 30 August

ROUTE: Down the eastern side of lake Garda. I am looking at possibly doing the western 'Strada della Forra' A spectacular road, but has some width restrictions. James Bond drove on some of it in Quantum of Solace. Has anyone here driven it in an Atom? From Lake Garda we take more or less the direct route down to Modena then on to Maranello, home of Ferrari. 115 miles, 3 hours. Shorter route to give us time to visit the Ferrari museum. Possibly some track time (15 mins) is included in the ticket. When we know who and how many people are going we need to book tickets. Hopefully the Atoms will provide some competition to the Ferraris parked outside. :)

HOTEL: Hotel Maranello Palace (owned by Ferrari for their guests and public)
Trip Advisor > https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... magna.html
Hotel site > http://www.hotelmaranellopalace.com/it/

Day 7 - Friday 31 August

ROUTE: Drive the short distance to the Lamborgini factory near Bologna, where Osky has arranged for one of his mates, who works there, to show us around. After the Lambo exotica we head down (with Osky) the Bologna to Florence Raticosa and Passo della Futa road. The Atoms will love it, and I guess we will as well. We will have a brief stop in Florence (can return later if you want – see below) then carry onto into Tuscany on the Via Chiantigiana to Siena where we will stop for the night. 142 miles, 5 hours. Remember we will have spent two hours at Lambourghini.

HOTEL: Hotel Borgo Grondaie (Book for 2 nights)
Trip Advisor > https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... scany.html
Hotel site > http://www.hotelsienaborgogrondaie.com

Day 8 - Saturday 1 September

ROUTE: This is a rest day. We will stay two nights in Sienna. You can relax by the pool at the hotel, travel to Florence or Siena for some culture, or we can go on a drive further into Tuscany. I was thinking of Val d'Orcia area. Osky has given me a lot of information which I will try to include. There is no route yet for this day up in MYrouteapp.com.

HOTEL: same as above

Day 9 - Sunday 2 September

ROUTE: A tour of the best bits of Tuscany. Only on good Atom roads of course. Head north from Siena, towards San Gimignano then around to Voltera. Towards the coast (but not quite) then up some twisty roads past Pisa and onto Lucca where we will stay. Again, I need to fine tune this day with info given to me by Osky. 6 hours, 150 miles.

HOTEL: Villa Alexandra
Trip Advisor > https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... scany.html
Hotel site > http://villaalexandra.it

Day 10 - Monday 3 September

ROUTE: Head north-west from Lucca up through 'the spine' of Italy in the mountains. Still mainly in north Tuscany. Various passes including Pass del Bocco. Head down towards the coast but stopping just before in Carasco, near the Portofino peninsula. I tried to find somewhere to stay there but the prices were silly. We can drive through the next day. About 150 miles (as I am still working out the route details).

HOTEL: Villa Paggi Country House
Trip Advisor > https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... =111154809
Hotel site > https://bedandbreakfast-liguria.com

Day 11 - Tuesday 4 September

ROUTE: Drop down to the coast and drive along the Via Aurelia (Italian Riviera). One of Italy's great drives (along with many others above). I will include some motorway to get around the very urbanised areas. Cross into France again drive through Monaco into Nice for the night. Approx 170 miles (still working on route).

HOTEL: La Villa Nice
TripAdvisor > https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... _d_Az.html
Hotel site > http://www.hotel-villa-nice.com/en/index

Day 12 - Wednesday 5 September

ROUTE: Head north-east from Nice up to the Route Haute Alpes, which we will spend two days driving through the French Alps. This day we will cover Col de Turini, Col de la Bonette, amongst others. We will stop just south of Briancon in La Shalp–Arvieux and stay in a ski hotel. Approx 160 miles (to be confirmed when the app lets me route through the Alps).

HOTEL: La Ferme
Hotel site (book direct) > http://www.laferme.fr/en

Day 13 - Thursday 6 September

ROUTE: Continue our route north through the awesome French Alps. Covering some more famous passes including Col du Galibier and Col de L'Iseran. We stop in Sous La Cote a village just south of Thonon Le Bain on Lake Geneva. Distance approx 160 to 170 miles. To be confirmed.

HOTEL: Auberge Le Moulin de Lere
Trip Advisor > https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... Alpes.html
Hotel site > http://www.moulindelere.com

Day 14 - Friday 7 September

ROUTE: We start our route home. Pass under lake Geneva and skirt briefly through Geneva then head north west, mainly on non-motorway roads, but there is some motorway. Stop just south of Troyes near the A26 at Magnat. 250 miles, 6.5 hours. May modify to reduce driving time by doing more motorway?

HOTEL: Logis Hotel Le Val Moret
Trip Advisor > https://www.tripadvisor.co.uk/Hotel_Rev ... d_Est.html
Hotel site > https://www.logishotels.com/fr/hotel/ho ... partid=661

Day 15 - Saturday 8 September

ROUTE: Drive up the A26. 250 miles to Calais and back home. Again, I may include some off-motorway route this day because we will have time.

That's it. Watch this space for updates. Book those hotels and the crossing now if you're joining us. Sorry about the long post.

Two points from above;

1. The time estimates are Google/MyrouteApp estimates, probably based on standard road/car/traffic metrics. Of course the Atom doesn't quite fit those metrics, so we could do it quicker. Times don't include stops.

2. If you request access to MyrouteApp Club group then PM me your name so I can match real names to forum names. Occasionally I get request from somebody I don't recognise and not from this forum. MyRoute App is a public forum, but you can restrict who sees what

Interested to join you on Saturday 25th, near Reims (my Birthtown),
i can plot you a 2hours long scenic ride and champagne cellars visits / tasting,

and then we can continue to Troyes (1hr from Reims)

I would join the group from the 25th to the 31th, and then i head back to south west of France from the Maranello Hotel.

Are you interested for a 2 hours (lets say 4h with champagne visit/tasting) ride near Reims (with a photo stop at the Gueux "historic" track) ?

Hi Thomas
It will be good if you can join us. Thanks for the suggestion. Perhaps we can put that in as a lunch diversion. I will look at routings on the App and get back to you. We are already driving a long way on the 25th, given that some will have been travelling hours on UK side also, so don't want to extend drive too much. However, your suggestion could be incorporated as a diversion off the motorway which is not a good place to be in an Atom for a long time.
