Nomad owners... why didn't you buy an Atom? Or something else?

Entertainment and stuff that has nothing to do with the models themselves...

Nomad owners... why didn't you buy an Atom? Or something else?

Post by Bruce Fielding » Tue Aug 18, 2015 2:42 pm

Following on from another thread elsewhere, I am genuinely interested in the reasons people decided to spend quite a bit of cash on a Nomad instead of an Atom.

The factory obviously thought Nomad was a good idea but I wonder if they did any research to prove that it would sell?

If you have a Nomad on order, I'd be grateful if you wouldn't mind telling us what the motivation was - and what other vehicles you considered when plumping for the Nomad.

I've just joined the forum as I have a Nomad on order.

Never owned an Atom and no particular desire to own one either, the Nomad bought me to the Ariel brand. It looked like brilliant fun, took it for a test drive and loved it.

There's not really much to compare the Nomad, I did look at a Bowler Wildcat in the past but they're significantly more money.

My car is speced with all the offroad options ticked and will probably see 50/50 road/dirt use.

I also joined the forum as I have a Nomad on order.  My reasons for not buying an Atom aren't quite clear to me but it sort of went like this:

1 - I love the Ariel aesthetic/weight reduction/form following function thing.  Always admired the Atom but somehow never quite imagined that I would buy one - kind of really saw it as a track car
2 - Keen motorcyclist - usually ride KTMs - both on and off road
3 - Wanted a more exciting car than my current MX5 - but still small and light
4 - Used to keep Land Cruisers and do trips etc in them
5 - Saw the Nomad on a review online and realised it was the vehicle I'd been waiting for all my adult life!
6 - Called Ariel 5 minutes later and ordered one
7 - Asked my wife (after ordering it) if we could afford it (luckily we could - just)
8 - Took it for a test drive and confirmed point 5.

Perhaps the message is that the Nomad is broadening Ariel's appeal envelope a little.

Interestingly, you could flip the question.

The reason I didn't buy (or haven't yet bought) a Nomad was because of the limited access I have to green lanes around where I live (St. Albans). I did do some research on this & concluded that, while there were areas one could go, they were a bit of a schlep to get to. Tom mentioned a Nomad-ordered owner living in Watford; I'll hook up with him I hope.

Having said that, my primary reason for owning an Atom is to track it. And my nearest track is Bedford: 50 mins away. So that's a little flawed then.

I've certainly not ruled out getting a Nomad. I've got the car, getting the bike. Might as well have the full set, eh.

Cheers,

Ok, here's my thoughts....
Simon and Tom represent bike nuts and car nuts.
Car nut but want bike acceleration? Atom.....has street bike qualities.
Bike nut but want car capabilities? Nomad....has dirt bike go most places qualities .
You can't take a street bike off-road , and you sure don't want to take a dirt bike round Brands.
Cars developed though a company's passion for bikes and cars, a fusion of power and four wheels.
DEEP respect to all at Ariel, nice broad appeal for those who do it on all fours, or up on two!  O0
