Advice 888R's

Post by tuscanracer » Tue Apr 02, 2019 6:59 pm

Hi Guys, finally got out on track in the car and wanted to get some feedback from others running 888's, i started off with cold pressures of 14 & 12 and was shocked how little these rose even over a good 7 laps pushing on[ambient temp was about 17] I run 888's on other stuff and see a greater change but i guess that might be down to how light the cars are, so it would be good to hear what optimal hot pressures people are running on these tyres.

Ive got to give Steve and the factory a shout for putting such a great track biased set up on the car, not that ive got a great frame of reference for Atoms but the car felt great and very planted and forgiving.

First impressions are what an incredible bit of kit and so much fun to throw about, definately took a while to get my head round just how late you can leave the braking and how much corner speed you can carry!

Weve got to more dates with RMA coming up @ Silverstone & Spa over the next month so looking forward to meeting some more Atom owners and getting some more miles in the car :vroom:

Hi there
I replaced my R888’s with the new R888r’s at the end of last year. I have to say that they are simply not as good as the old design imho. They hold temperature very well and never really get hot and sticky like the R888’s did. I used 16 and 14psi which seemed to stay level at 18/16 when hot.
I think the R888r has been designed for cars heavier than ours as the sidewalls are very stiff. This is why they don’t seem to get properly hot and “work” as they should.
I’m actually considering changing them for something else due to the lack of grip - horses for course I guess, but I don’t think the R888r’s work well on our Atoms.
Just my opinion of course 😁

In our opinion the R888 worked well when there was a super soft front compound available... If you could get heat into them they would work incredibly well...

Id recommend Kumhos now... or Avons (atom 4 tyre)...

Should you get the Kumho’s in a super soft compound? Or would that wear off too fast?

PaulF,

They have loads of grip, but do wear quite fast yes.

struggle to get heat into them and therefore, ultimately, less grip than the Yoko`s or Avons…

I’m in Atoms for 9 years now and have used a lot of tyres, the old r888 was good on the road and track, very well balanced, even with a gg/medium front it was loads of fun. (It gets some more understeer on the harder compound. So on my 3.5 I’ve putten the R888r as the previous where so good, but I threw them of after two ruined trackdays, they never give enough trust, the rear is like on eggs, so can’t push.

Swapped to Avon zzr as on the 4, superbly good tyre, doesn’t wear fast, good thread depth when new (compared to the Kumho) and gives so much trust.

All though someone mentioned the R888r has a too stiff sidewall, I think it is the other way round, it is too soft which makes the bumps go into the tyre instead of the damper.
The Avon seems much more stiff which gives more trust, no roll what so ever. The Toyo rolls a bit and snaps on high g force.
