Newbie with an Atom 3.5R (...and Atom 4 kind of!)

Post by geeforce » Sun Jun 28, 2020 10:45 pm

Dear All,

Just wanted to say 'Hi!' to everyone. I’m from Bristol so wondered if there were any other South West owners here?

I've been very fortunate to have access to my very good friend's Atom 3.5R (shipped over from HK) and have been encouraged to make the most of it. So look forward to some events and track days with other members here. I've joined as an Ariel Club member, so excited to see how 2020 pans out post-lockdown. :tu:

Have owned some fantastic sports cars previously, but I have to say there really is no substitute for an Atom when it comes to thrills. Just wow! Had an incredible time driving it across Cheddar the other night.

I'm also helping to sell an Atom 4 as well, so hope we can find this beautiful and very highly spec'd car a very happy home:

Also from Bristol but currently in a supercharged Honda Elise until my Atom 4 turns up early next year. Didn't know about the SW FB group - I've just requested to join :)

Car looks awesome! :tu:

Welcome Jason. I take it the 3.5R is the one featured here

That is one hell of a friend!

I am down in Cornwall, one of only 2 Atoms down here, as far as I know.

What's the story with the 4 for sale?

Thanks Fastlane. He's a top man indeed. One of the best and that's before we even talk about trusting me with his car...and yes, that's the car!

The Atom was sent to HK as a showcar (my friend and I are distributors for Ariel in HK), which we were going to register and own. However, new 2020 HK's emission rules became stricter, so as it stands, the Atom 4 can't pass (even though it's cleaner than the 3.5R!). So looking to sell this Atom 4 and working with the Ariel factory on solutions for the future.

I also had an supercharged Honda Elise for a few years, I had it converted in 2005 by MSC, sold it in 2009 to move to a Noble M400. I’m also waiting for an Atom 4, looking like early 2021 delivery. Based in Weston super Mare.

Regards
Andrew

I’m also in Bristol with a Honda S1 Elise - N/A on throttle bodies in my case. Waiting for the Atom 4 sometime next year. Need to get the Elise up on PistonHeads and try to find a buyer this summer.

Not on Facebook - is it worth joining for the SW group or is it duplicated on here?

Preseh,

is your Elise the S1 HPE located in North Somerset? Whereabouts in North Somerset?

Mine was a silver 2001 S2, which I bought new and MSC converted after a few years, it was a really lovely low mileage car. I still miss it, apart from the vibrations the Honda engine introduced which Maidstone never sorted.

Last time I looked on Seloc, I think it was a guy called Dr H who owned my old car, he's had it for ages

Hi Jason. I am just south of Bristol and the other side of the hill from cheddar. I didn’t realise there was a SW page for so have joined that. May see you soon around here. Gordon

So what are the emissions of the Atom 4? You seem to know...I have an Atom 4 on order and CO2 number is important for my local taxes

Do Ariel state the emissions of an Atom 4?

They certainly didn't in previous versions of the Atom, I had to get mine tested (not cheap) to establish a CO2 rating before I could register it in Cyprus.

In the case of my Atom the result was 183gms/km which is the figure I had to use to calculate and pay the local importation emissions tax - turned out (not surprisingly) quite close to it's contemporaneous Honda Type R!

I would imagine, as a rough guide, that an Atom 4's emissions are pretty similar to the Honda Type R that uses the same turbocharged engine?

And what actually happened to this project???
"The car will also be the first Ariel vehicle to undergo full European Small Series Type Approval (ESSTA) and ADR (Australian Design Rules) testing, to enable Atom 4 to be sold throughout Europe and Australasia with a Certificate of Conformity from 2019. Said Tom Siebert, director of Ariel Motor Company, “Though we have had a small European presence over the years, there is an enormous demand for our vehicles in this market and elsewhere in the world. British-built, low volume vehicles appeal on many different levels and type approval is key to our future commitment to service those markets effectively. As well as our existing network of dealers, we will appoint new key agents in various countries, to make sure that as many potential customers have access to Atom 4 as possible.”

I think HK's emission rules are particularly stringent. It wasn't just the total CO2 figure, but also elements like charcoal elements etc.
