Re: 3.5R For Sale

My view is that there are lots of 4s being made and there seem to be a lot being sold. The 3.5R will always be a rarer beast and, my unpopular view only, it might go down as the best thing Ariel ever made. In secret, in dark quiet rooms, with full anonymity I think some at the factory think so too. When there's an Atom 5, would you want an F40 or an F50?

It is indeed and from what I've heard on YouTube, the scream of the 3 is a much nicer sound than the fart of the 4. I'll maybe pop up to the factory and get Reg or Steve take me out for a drive.

That is kind offer and I think you may be right about Crewkerne! You could always bring your R down to Falmouth...
CAG3D wrote: Sat Jan 15, 2022 6:36 pm Do you think £70k on a 3.5R is a safer money wise? Or would the 4 hold value better?
As the pinnacle of the supercharged cars, I would guess an R would hold more of its value but probably cost more to run than a 4.

The cost to upgrade from a 3.5 to a 3.5R WITHOUT the sequential gearbox is Circa £20,000 inc VAT if you include Ohlins and the full frame mods.

Fastlane

I think that if you check the photos of the 3.5R up for just under £70,000 it appears that it has Ohlins.
However it's not clear whether it has the 2.0 or 2.4 litre engine fitted?

- the cheaper import, which I'm not sure is a genuine 3.5R (sidepods look a bit strange to me - aftermarket?) - has the Bilsteins.
The advert only says that it's a 3.5

The £70k R doesn't have Ohlins - if you look closely, you'll see it has the adjustable Bilsteins with both the main and helper springs powder coated yellow. It has the 2.4 engine fitted - again if you look closely you can see the silver cam cover.

The cheaper one is certainly priced as an R, but I agree it doesn't look quite right.

Having looked at all the photos more closely you are entirely right re the Dampers - they are the 10 way Bilsteins.

As to the engine I did see the silver rocker box but the advert spec text clearly says it's a 2.0 litre - hence my expression of confusion!

3.5Rs are like rocking horse sh*t.

Providing they are factory maintained, low mileage, right spec and not track slags i can't see how they will lose money.

Original price was £80k with the sequential box so £70k without this and mags is strong money.

I have the factory's 2017 pricing spreadsheet and based on the advert, it comes to just under £70k.

The Sadev price at build was £22,200 inc. VAT, the Ohlins were £5358 and the Dymags were £3836, so with all them fitted it have cost £97k, or £75k without the Sadev. :H:

Thanks for that - looks like in 2014 there was poetic license https://www.motor1.com/news/46680/ariel ... price-tag/

And £28k quote from the factory was pulled from the air.

What was the charge for the power hike and side pods?

atomiser wrote: Sat Jan 15, 2022 4:35 pm Iirc, the factory were quoting around £28k to upgrade (labour power, wheels, suspension and sequential box) on a 3.5 s/s

Does that sound right? Or is it more?
You can forget about this. I wanted to do a box only (had the other R stuff used) but the chassis on a 3.5 is not ok to fit the box, so it is a complete strip, weld the bracket in place, ship chassis to chassisbuilder and powdercoater company and total rebuild….thán the box wás indeed a 22k upgrade, but that price also includes not taking the stock box, so count an extra 7k to that price. I was looking at 35-40k range for box only ánd the they added they rather not did the build…

£28k, it’s not silly, it will / could, to the right buyer, add £28k to the car.

So, my manmaths calculator actually states it’s free……..

Going back to the original question then, a true factory built 3.5R, used, £70k OR an Atom 4 for £70k?
