2018 Nomad 300 for sale, 2848 miles. ** Now SOLD **

Post by phil4 » Thu Sep 09, 2021 5:55 pm

The time has come for me to sell my Nomad. It's been a great time, and such a great all round car it'll be a shame to see it go. I hope by advertising it here first it'll go to a genuine Ariel fan who'll make good use of it, and not to some dealer who flips it, hence advertised here first.

The spec is:
Supercharged Nomad, with road kit, Gunmetal metallic frame, Ohlins gold engine cover/bonnet... plus details as follows:

Heavy Duty Clutch including K20 Flywheel
Raised Air Intake
Oil Cooler System (In Engine Bay)
Polished Stainless Steel Manifold and Silencer, Including cat and decat pipe
Stainless Fittings on Brake lines and Clutch Line
Alcon 4 Pot Caliper/290 Disc Front
Alcon 4 Pot Caliper/290 Disc Rear
Brake calipers painted in Ohlins Yellow, with black lettering
Mechanical Handbrake
Hydraulic Handbrake System
Cockpit Adjustable Remote Brake Bias
Ohlins Multi Adjustable Hydraulic Bumpstop Dampers with 2 piece springs
Quick Release Steering Wheel
Smoked Side Panels
Stainless Steel Fixings
Full Heated Front Windscreen including Washers and Wipers
FIA Approved Battery Master Switch Kit
12v. Auxillary feed with Cigarette Lighter Type Socket
Tracker (Insurance approved)
Passenger + clutch footrest
Painted Bonnet and Rear Engine Cover
WARN Winch Assembly (Front Only)
Front Suspension Box and Body Tub Guard
Coolant Pipe Guard - Engine Bay to Body Tub
Sump Guard/Bash Plate
Carbon Fiber Instrument Panel
Paint Bulkheads etc Black
Black Exhaust Guard
Rear Bumper
LED/whip - Orange
Light Mounting Bar with x 4 Daytime Running Lamps and Driving Lights
Fire Extinguisher (Stand Alone)
High-Level Brake Light
Locking Fuel Cap
18" Wheel Package/All Terrain 65% Tyres
Spare Wheel and Tyre
Spare Wheel Carrier

In addition:
Battery trickle charger (connector fitted nicely)
15" Wheels with Mud Terrains Tyres
Spare bonnet - Gunmetal
Spare engine cover - Black
Hi-Lift jack and accessories
Ariel's offroad pack including straps etc

As you can see it's really well specified, with lots and lots and lots of options, and very little missing. It's been serviced at the factory each year, and not had any problems in it's time with me. I'm the 2nd owner, Hedge having been the first. It's covered just 2848 miles.

It had it's last service at Ariel at the end of July, no work needed. And it was also MOT'd for the first time then, no problems found.

I'm looking for £74,999 or very damn close.

A couple of pics attached so you can see what it's like. Any questions let me know.

Why did you flog it, Phil?

I have to say of all the cars I've ever owned, the Nomad is the one I miss & enjoyed the least.

Cheers,
Hedge

Hi Hedge, I just fancied a change.

It defo had some upsides and downsides. On the upside for anything but a small trip it was a comfy and fun car to drive. No need for a helmet, forgiving suspension... I make it sound like a daily driver, but playful handling makes it different. It also really felt at home if I strayed offroad.. nothing quite like blasting along at silly speeds on a loose dirt road.

For a short trip, the Atom was better... a blast round the Wantage triangle for example was stellar in the Atom.

The downside was really the cleaning... it's a pig to get at all the nooks and crannys, compared to the atom.

I think for me personally it'll hold equal standing in my memories of it and the Atom, they both have upsides and downsides which sort of mesh together.

I say all the above is my personal view, I'm not for one second saying your thinking is wrong Hedge.

Interesting. I completely concur with all your thoughts, Phil.

I've said elsewhere - I think - that part of my rationale for the Nomad was that inclement weather almost encouraged one to go out (as directly opposed re the Atom). And that such weather provoked/ encouraged skids etc.

Thing is, I found that dull after a (v short) while. Sure, it's fun, skidding about etc. But you shortly arrive at a point where you think "really? 65K to do skids & stuff, is that it?". But......you park that negativity for a while & watch/hear/read others owners experiences, cos you so desperately want to love the thing/ discover what you're missing/ what others get-that-you-don't or seemingly aren't. Not least since you've dropped an obscene amount of mullah on the thing in the first place. And what do you actually get? You see videos of owners splashing through BIG puddles at 30/40mph. Pulling the occasional handbrake turn in a deserted area. And, er, that's about it. How many experiences match those that prompted the purchase in the first place?

I think peeps get drawn in by watching Matt Prior - a complete Nomad aficionado - & maybe Catchpole etc & think they'll "have some of that". They see themselves hurtling through the forests, along Salisbury Plain. Yet the reality is so different. One, they v rarely do the stuff they've seen on YT, if ever. Fact. Secondly, when they do, they have to spend hours after, cleaning the thing. And that is beyond tedious.

I just don't get the Nomad. In the same way as I completely get the Atom. I'm not alone here - even within Ariel themselves.

Cheers,
Hedge

Nomad R then. Sits in the middle as an absolute riot on road but still silly skids/drifts plus down a B road it just bounds along without the worry of potholes or bottoming out. I was never going to go big off road as those places aren’t near me nor, to your point, would I want to smash a very expensive toy through that sort of terrain!
I love my R. It’s a riot and ticks all the right boxes
Yes an Atom 4 on track driven by someone who knows what they’re doing would be quicker, but stick the right tyres on the R, fiddle with (mess up 🤣) the Ohlins, and the way it accelerates would keep most atom 4s very honest indeed up to indecent speeds (where the aero of the nomad doesn’t help!).
For me, they are all wonderful and thank god we live in a world where these things exist!!

I tried mine on track once. Adjusted the Ohlins, had road tyres on it etc. It was ok but, to be brutally honest, it has nothing on an Atom when it comes to a track. I wouldn't imagine a seq box would alter that dynamic much, either. And nor should it; they're cars with completely opposing aims/ qualities/ strengths & weaknesses.

Love the fact you love your Nomad R so much. Like you, I'm glad they simply exist. They're utterly unhinged, it's mega. I'm glad I tried one, they're just not for me.

Cheers,
Hedge

Hedge, I'm not sure about the Nomad either. My reasons are similar, as I can't see where I can go off road and if you do, you have to resign yourself to two days cleaning. It has to be a better on road car to make it viable.

I have 15 inch Geolanders and on my local roads it tramlines all over the place. I think 18 inch wheels with quality tyres will make it a sound proposition on road.

Valey80 what tyres is your "R" fitted with?

Jerry, I had the 18" Geolanders on mine and no tramlining.

Second vote for the 18" wheel setup, much less bump steer and tramlining
Nothing stickier than a tree

Have to say if I was ordering again, my spec would be less, as I think less = more.

In that I wold delete the 4 spot lights, spare wheel, TomTom, winch and maybe the front bumper and choose the 18".

Also, controversially may not have the Supercharger, however keep the Ohlins and Alcans.

I have the 18” but with geolander a currently. The AO52s would make it grip and rip much harder but I wanted it looser and more all weather.
I plan on a second set of wheels with something like AO52s for track and sunny days but haven’t got yet!
