24 Hours of LeMons
24 Hours of LeMons
I was at the 24 Hours of LeMons over the weekend and it was hilarious! It's a 2 day endurance race where you're only allowed to spend $500 or less on the car (not including safety equipment) and the winner is the one who can drag their heap over the finish line still running. It's like Burning Man meets motor racing, people decorate their cars in all sorts of crazy ways. The best bits are the penalties for bad behaviour. They pull you off the track into the penalty box and administer various unpleasant punishments on you. My favourite is the Max Mosley.
I'm very tempted to enter next time!

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons
I've read about this series in a number of car magazines and it sounds like a hell of a lot of fun. There's been cool highlights here and there on Jalopnik too. I'd do it in a second, but the event doesn't get very close to these parts. :'(
Heck, look at this bit of active aero engineering inspired by LeMons.

Re: 24 Hours of LeMons
Spoke with DP35 on it a few months back. Would do it next year if your up for it! I think it would be a riot. A small "atom team" would be great fun. Maybe something my skills would be usefull for? (drinking )
Re: 24 Hours of LeMons
No Pete, we talked about the 25 Hours of Thunderhill, which is a slightly more serious race at the same track, a few weeks earlier. I've been looking into that idea more seriously lately. But of course that doesn't mean I wouldn't be interested in this too...
Re: 24 Hours of LeMons
I'm game for sure, it's a lot of fun! And you get a ton of track time
Re: 24 Hours of LeMons
If I was really rich, I'd sell you my Atom for $500 so you could enter and DOMINATE
Re: 24 Hours of LeMons
They would see through that immediately, they gave one guy a 25,000 hour penalty for his turbo even though he swore blind it cost less than $500.

Here's how they discourage people from that sort of cheating:

I love the way that they got it back up and running within an hour though.
Then, as it was now much lighter without the bits they'd removed, it went faster than before and put in the quickest lap of the whole race.
