Which other interesting cars have you owned / do you own

Post by benyeats » Wed Oct 01, 2008 9:39 am

So mainly for the sake of posting the first topic on this new board....

Which other interesting cars have you owned or do you own ?  In my case nothing terribly exciting but I am sure I am almost alone in this.

I've been through quite a few - currently got an Aston V8 Vantage and have previously had: Porsche 996C2; Exige S2; Caterham Superlight R300; Elise S1; Boxster S as well as the odd Beemer.  Most fun was definitely my first car though - a 1988 Ford Fiesta Popular!  Ah, the joy of being 17 and having no fear as I barrelled it round corners faster than I'd dare to do on the road now...

Of course, in 18 months time the Atom will take that accolade I'm sure!  ;)

I've only owned 4 cars in my life, and still own three of them.  Whether they'd be considered interesting or not can be judged by othes.

-1985 Chevrolet Sprint (rebadged Suzuki Swift)  Sold it when I went into the military.
-1990 Mazda Miata (aka Mazda Eunos/MX-5):  highly modified
-Ariel Atom
-1988 Toyota MR-2 SC:  Bought it used last year, starting to restore/modify it.  Engine being rebuilt/improved now.

Yup. Gilbern cars were built in Llantwit Fadre, not far from me. They used to produce kits to avoid car tax or something similar BUT, it wasn't unheard of for them to complete the cars in another shed up the road! They went bust despite a full order book.

The strange coincidence is that a guy I now work with is the cousin of one of the founders of Gilbern cars!

Mercedes R107 300SL (this one is a keeper, soon to be retired for restoration)
Ariel Atom 120 (probably a keeper unless I change it for another Atom)

Some highlights...

1971 Triumph Herald 13/60 - my first car. I don't remember much about it...
1972 Ford Corsair V6 - bench seat, column shift, early 70's, nuff said!
1974 MG B Roadster - Very cool when you're an art student living in a squat in Holland Park
1979 Alfa Romeo Alfasud  1.5ti - my first company car. It was great, handled very well and the boxer engine sounded fantastic
1980 Fiat 131 Mirafiori Sport 2000 Abarth - huge fun, handled like a dream and went like stink. Sounded nice, too.
1981 Alfa Romeo GTV 2000 - lovely little car.
1981 Jeep CJ7 Renegade - used the back seat as my sofa. Terrified taxi drivers
1982 Opel Manta GTE - nice, but dull, and the pedals were waaay too offset
1984 Ford Escort XR3i -  yuppie? Moi?
1985 Ford Sierra XR4i - loadsamoney!
1987 Morgan +8 - lethal in the wet
1988 Aston Martin DB6 Mk1 Vantage - I still hanker after this one
1990 Triumph TR5 pi - lovely car, but a bit small
1989 Volvo 240 GLT (plus two more) - practical and robust, and not too sluggish
1992 Peugeot 605 V6 - very sophisticated, great sound system, plus the Ronin factor
1993 Lotus Carlton - fabulous, until it got stolen
1994 Lotus Carlton - fabulous, until it got stolen and torched
1996 Ford Explorer - tried to kill me, twice.
1997 Volvo V70R FWD - best all rounder car I know
1998 Alvis TE21 - lovely and fun and makes people smile when they see it
2000 TVR Griffith 500 - fabulous noise, masses of grunt, never got used
2001 Ariel Atom 165 - addiction starts here
2004 Ariel Atom 2 220 - and continues...
2007 Volvo D5 SE Sport - still not convinced about this one...

...Plus lots of bikes and lots of other, more boring cars.

NB. Years are the dates I bought/got cars, not the years of the cars - e.g. Alvis is 1964

Some serious problems here - I have a pal who has driven his 95 maxima since 95 - I am guessing he's saved enough for an Enzo by now.

Bruce - you had two Lotus Carlton's stolen?

I shake my head when I look at most of this list. There were others as well, but they were even worse than what's here...

1988 - Lancia Beta Coupe (fully restored. Looked fantastic, but completely unreliable)
1989 - My first Ford XR3i (bought without any mechanical advice from Father, and spent the next 12 months replacing clutch, head gasket, shocks, etc....   )
1990 - Ford Capri 2.8i. Lavvly....
1992 - Ford RS Turbo. Had it "chipped" to a colossal (not!) 190 bhp. All fine for 18months, until i realised i should have upgraded the gearbox to match. Sold quickly...
1994 - Toyota Supra 3.0 (not the twin-turbo one). Had it chipped to 300 bhp. Great in a straight line. Crap otherwise..
1995 - Mitsubishi 3000GT Twin Turbo. More gadgets than you could shake a stick at. I loved this car....
1997 onwards - A succession of nice, but relatively bland - company cars.
2007 - Atom 300. Every bit as good as Jeremy said it would be...

The pictures of the second Carlton Burnt (to a crisp rusty shell) are heartbreaking..
