In case it was not picked up by the UK media Fabian Coulthard started this years Bathurst 1000 race with a spectacular crash before the first lap was completed.

Fabian is a UK born professional race care driver who is second cousin of former F1 driver David Coulthard and previously team mates with  Lewis Hamilton in British Formula Renault. Now racing in the Australian V8 Supercars series, Fabian showed what can go wrong when your tyre shreds while you're traveling close to 300kph.

This footage is testament to the brilliant engineering that goes into roll cage design in modern race cars.

Great job by his teammate not to get caught up in it. A very good reason to practice off line driving.. :H:

It's an awesome race. 1000 kms, 161 laps, up and down the side of Mount Panorama with a 174 metre (570 ft) vertical difference between its highest and lowest points.

Circuit detail -   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Panorama

One lap is 6.213 km (4 mi) long and this year the fastest ever V8 Supercar lap record was broken during practice when Craig Lowndes recorded a time of 2:06.8012.

This year the winners, Craig Lowndes/Mark Skaife, completed the race in 6h 12m 51.4153s at an average speed of 160.9196 km/hr (99.9908 mph)

Fabian's troubles began approximately where the green dot is in this picture.
