Had a Mercedes engine (2.7 diesel iirc) so that could be where the mistake came from

Funny you mentioning them because this car embarrassed Mercedes when it beat the A-Class in a test.

A Trabant

The logo is from a Trabant. The S is for Satellite, as Trabant means satellite.

Correct, it is the "Trabant", which is German for 'satellite', to honor the Soviet satellite Sputnik, but the 'S' actually stands for "Sachsenring", which was the name of the East German auto maker who formerly made it and had named themselves after the famous race track.

Well done John, you get to set the next one.

Ben

p.s. don't know the A-class story but assume the Trabant did better in the elk test rather than being better in any objective way.

I assume you're referring to the test mentioned on the site I found my information on.
In the 1990s, the Trabant suddenly became famous when it upset the famous "Mercedes-Benz A-Class" while performing the common "Moose test" (a sort of slalom with small obstacles on the course). The Trabant perfectly passed the test. Mercedes had to deal with the embarrassment, while the Trabant received unexpected praise.
