Imobiliser lamp malfunction

Post by Curves Junkie » Sat Mar 27, 2021 7:21 pm

I did a lot of service work on my Ariel this winter.

Today I reconnected the battery and started the engine for the first time. Everything works perfectly.

Only my immobiliser is causing problems.

The immobiliser light in the dash no longer flashes when the ignition is off for more than 30 seconds.

I can turn off the immobiliser with the fob and start the engine.
However, when the engine is running, the light stays on as long as the engine is running.

Any suggestions where the problem might be?

Curves Junkie

I may be wrong but before I upgraded my dash I seem to remember a similar problem with my Atom which turned out to be caused by the handbrake microswitch needing adjustment.

Does the immobiliser still function - or can you just always now start the car / hear the fuel pump prime when you flick the switch?

Easy thing to try - Disconnect battery for a couple of minutes, reconnect and try again?

Could also be an earthing issue
- did you reconnect both earth wires to different earthing points and are they clean connection points? - no paint etc preventing good earth connection.

What do you talk about the upgraded dash? Do you have before the upgrade problems or after upgrade?
Can you remember what was your problem with the handbrake microswitch??

Hi Atlarge
the immobiliser himself is in full function.
After 30 sec. ignition off I'm not able to start the engine. But immobiliser dash lamp is not blinking.
Ignition on, the immobiliser dash lamp is permanently on.
Fob on ring I hear the relais-click from the immobiliser and I can start the engine.

Hello John Scherrer
done several times. No change.

Also done.
You talk about both earth wires at the battery? Yes, they are clean, also the connectors at the frame and engine.

@all
Maybe a broken cable make this problem??

hmm.. maybe also take a good look at the connector going into the back of your dash. Maybe a bent pin or short?
The alarm indicator pins should be number 16(+) and 19(-) if yours is the same as mine - maybe something there got damaged when you put the dash back?

Done. All connectors at the dash are fine.
Any idea how pin 16 and 19 works? How are they controlled?

I meant the 2 earth wires coming from the Immobiliser box itself.

I don't have my car anymore, but I understand that all the wires are coloured black but they had coloured sleeves on each wire to identify how to install the unit. In theory, the installer (Ariel build engineer) should remove the coloured sleeves on installation to make it more difficult to bypass or hotwire - not sure if Ariel do remove the coloured sleeves?

No sleeves on my wires. :'( O0

Did you remove and reconnect any electrical wires in your winter maintenance?

I have wiring information etc but don’t want to post on a public site .. I can see if I can PM it for you.

Good Morning John,

sure I had done.
This winter I had done a really, really big maintenance - started End of September but still not finished. 5 years in my ownership and 50000 on the clock with hard use in wind and bad weather I have renewed and improved a lot to make my Atom even better.
First engine run was on last Saturday. Removed all air bubbles from the cooling system yesterday . Now I have to do the setup on all four corners and corner weight to get ready to rumble. :vroom:

Every winter the battery is "sleeping" in my warm office. :D
This winter maintenance I disconnect the SPA-dash from the wiring harness.
Adding some gauges, adding some wiring and fuses at the fuse department.
From the immobiliser I had all connectors removed for clean cable routing AND reconnect all of them again.
I have wiring information etc but don’t want to post on a public site .. I can see if I can PM it for you.
I will be happy if you send me a PM.
Maybe it will help and get me further in solving the problem with the burning lamp.

I think that in my old analogue SPA dash the immobiliser light (after the car was energised and the ignition active) also acted as the handbrake 'on' warning light - the problem in my case was with the handbrake microswitch (in the handbrake assembly itself) which needed to be lubricated and adjusted!

When my Atom was upgraded to be a 3.5R I changed to the digital dash - this was over 3 years ago now so my memory of exactly which light was involved may be wrong?
