Hartley V8 flat plane ?
Hartley V8 flat plane ?
In the Autocar write up, I read that the Atom V8 engine is flat plane crank as distinct from cross plane.
http://www.projectm71.com/Cross_FlatPlane.htm
shows some animation of the two configurations and some discussion of merits.
McLaren, Ferrari are flat plane crank v8s.
Hartley V8 too?
http://www.h1v8.com/page/page/1562069.htm
does not say so and as that's a special "feature" if it were, one would expect it to be claimed..

Re: Hartley V8 flat plane ?
I don't think it is considered special on a race type engine so perhaps not deemed worthy of mention
Re: Hartley V8 flat plane ?
It has a brief mention at http://www.h1v8.com/page/page/1564765.htm - "Since the engine would have a flat plan crank, the V angle was open to dimension restrictions only."

Re: Hartley V8 flat plane ?
In reading the tech details on the flat-plane crank, it seems that when sticking two 4-cylendar engines together, this is the easy way to go (which explains why Hartley went that route.)
However, it also appears that it balances better, so has less need of counterweights, has less inertia, and so accelerates higher, and handles higher RPM easier.
I still want to upgrade mine.
