Symptoms of a failing ECT sensor

Post by smokin » Mon Jul 17, 2017 1:42 pm

I've just resolved a problem I've been having with my SC Atom 2 and wanted to share here in case anyone else experiences it.

When hard on the throttle with rpms approaching 5k the ECU would cut the power. It felt like the engine was being switched off. If I eased off the loud pedal it would come back to life.

The car would happily go past 5k rpm as long as I wasn't hard on the pedal.

One other symptom that I didn't connect at the time was it idling around 1,100 instead of the usual 950.

The fault turned out to be the ECT (coolant temp) sensor. I have 3, one that triggers the fan, one that feeds the dash and the standard Honda one in the block feeding the ECU.

The Honda ECT sensor was working ok up to 57C but wouldn't go any higher. Because it was sort-of working no code was being thrown.

The ECU has an engine protection feature that cuts the injectors if the SC (or turbo) boost is high when the engine is cold. My engine wasn't cold but the ECU thought it was as the trigger point for cold/warm is 60C.

I had a new sensor on the shelf so a quick swap out and all is good.

That's an unusual fault and well-diagnosed ..

Thanks for the heads up ..
