Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
As a few people have been asking whether or not to spec the lightweight fly wheel, I did a quick vid after my run out this evening (my neighbours love me!) to show how responsive it is. If I get a lightweight one I will do a comparison not sure I need one just yet. But hopefully from this you can see how responsive it is just by slightly revin'g the engine. It's less easy to do this while driving.
Re: Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
Thank you - think that will be a definite on my spec sheet.

Re: Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
Yes it is slow, but you really don't notice it when you are on it in the power band from one gear to the next. But if you have the cash, then I'd say get it.
Re: Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
Thank you for this Simon very helpful.
I think as others have posted it would seem a light flywheel won't add anything significant enough over a standard one, to make it a worthwhile investment.
Question: Has anyone actually driven an Atom 4 with and without a light flywheel to provide a more accurate account?

Re: Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
We all have different priorities but for me that is a strange conclusion to reach from that short video? Ideally engine revs should flare and die quickly in response to the throttle, that doesn’t and hopefully can be addressed via a lighter flywheel (4.4kg rather than 8.2kg) rather than being a fundamental of the turbo engine.

Re: Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
Like I said, if you have the cash/budget and want to spend it, it will make the car better for sure. I am considering it when I get the sequential box fitted but have not yet decided because it is a lot of money. Just to be clear, the engine revs in that video was me gingerly lightly pressing the pedal, it's a loud car and it was evening time. The take away to note is how slow the engine returns to idle. When on full boost - you really do not notice the heavy flywheel!
It will be great if someone could do a similar video with the lightweight flywheel, I know some people have spec'ed it.

Re: Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
One of the first things I noticed after going from NA to Supercharged was the difference the lightened flywheel made.
The engine turns over quicker, revs quicker, drops revs quicker - all as you would expect.
I wasn't looking for these changes when I first hopped in the car, I was of course more focused on the addition of the supercharger, but I was quite taken back by how pronounced the changes were with the lightened flywheel.

Re: Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
Is a lightened flywheel with the charger a partricular to the Nomad configuration Karl?
When my Atom '3' got charged, it retained the same flywheel ..

Hi John,
On the Nomad the option is "Heavy Duty Clutch with K20 Flywheel". This appears to also be done when fitting the SC.
It suggests that your Atom already had the K20 flywheel (as it was a K20), so doubt it needed changing. If you there was an option on the Atom 3 for a lightweight flyhweel I suspect it was even lighter than the K20 one fitted to SC Nomads.

Re: Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
I checked the Atom Mugen, '3' and '3.5' Excel Options Pricelists and a lightweight flywheel option didn't show ..

Re: Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
Weird it shows on my 3.5 spec price list I received in 2017.
There are 2 options, looks like it has a different clutch unlike the 4:
Lightweight flywheel with road/track clutch (for use with supercharger)
Lightweight flywheel with track/race clutch (for use with supercharger)

Re: Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
I believe it was only offered on the K24 in the Atom and Nomad to give them the lighter K20 flywheel and clutch
Atom 2 160 (05-11) / Atom 3 245 (12-19 ) / Nomad 300 (22-)
Re: Atom 4 standard flywheel rev time
For comparison, here's a supercharged Nomad doing the same sorta thing:

Much more like it.
