It might look better but probably not perform so efficiently - think of the airflow

Maybe it will change a bit, when the wings will appear?!
Apart from the snorkel, which takes a lot of getting used to it, I don´t understand why that cooler has to have such an ugly shape ??
Looks to me like Frankenstein welded it:-)
And then in aluminum, so it really catches the eye...
Why not you just leave it triangular, that would look much better,
wouldn´t it??!!
I do think the wings will make it look so much better. The Atom to me has always look a little weird without the wings, but I think still cool and also it should improve performance.

No more red crackle cam cover...

Post by Peter255 » Tue Sep 24, 2019 7:41 pm

Had a nose about under the rear bodywork tonight.

Fake carbon cover one end (plastic)

Red plastic cover at the other end

Over a black plastic cam cover (as noted)

Bit shocked the cam cover isn't metal! :-\

Most modern 4 pots have plastic valve / cam covers. Much lighter than metal too.

I am 100% sure its fine. It is Honda after all. It will have been tested extensively. :)

I'm just honestly a bit surprised to find the use of plastics has gone this far. I guess I am a bit old school and like to see machined / cast metal for the engine. Seems more robust to me especially due to the heat and vibration of the engine.

You're not old school, you're sensible. You've heard of designed obsolescence, you realise that a manufacturer doesn't design things to last forever. They design them to last a known (to them) distance past the warranty expiry, and save every penny they can achieving that.

Call me cynical, but they're not a charity. :fence:

I would be surprised if it's made from a plastic, it's probably some kind of composite that includes plastic but a whole bunch of other materials so that it can sustain the heat applied to it otherwise it might warp. That said, I am surprised like you it's not made from some kind of metal. I guess it's a sign of the times to reduce cost.

On a related topic, I was digging around and found this: http://www.4pistonracing.com/4p-k20c-kc600 it looks rather tasty. I wonder what sort of power can be achieved from it. It has forged rods, pistons etc. They claim it can handle a lot more power than the stock engine.

That looks fab - I saw your car in build and the finish on the painted panels was lovely.

How do you find the Ohlins on the road?

I wonder what that plate is used for across the centre of the dash.
