Atom 4R with 400Bhp??

Post by wasp » Fri May 24, 2019 11:59 am

It looks like Team Dynamics have been able to get over 400Bhp out of the Civic without any serious modifications beyond those pretty much already on the spec sheet for the 4.
So please can we have 400Bhp too Ariel?? ;) ;D

Atom 4 R will be circa 400BHP i would think. 400 sounds good and is definitely achievable with a stage 2/3 tune.

That would gives a nice model range:

Something like this:
  • Atom 4 320 (base / stock)
  • Atom 4 350 (remap and decat)
  • Atom 4R 400 (decat, new turbo?, injectors?, fuel pump?, larger intercooler, remap and larger radiator)
Its interesting that car has hit 400bhp with just a remap, new induction kit, and uprated intercooler. If the Atom 4 induction is already good and same for the intercooler a 400bhp map would be possible. I think from what i have read on Civic remapping 350BHP is quite a mild level of tune. I think this is to create "space" in the model range to distinguish the more expensive future R. Other tuners suggest circa 370 BHP for a decat and remap.

Will be interesting looking into these options. >:D
Atom 4, Clio v6, & some other cars obviously.

Don't forget that in a front engined car, it is easy to upgrade the intercooler to a bigger one,
but in the Atom 4, it looks complicated to get more cooling capacity/flow.

So if with 320hp, IAT's are already high (i don't know), don't expect a easy 400hp map;

Add 20kg, add more tubing, ... ;D

That is what I was thinking re: the inter-cooler. You could have a much wider one right across the underside of the car and much thinner otherwise it will be massive. Then the side pods could add additional air into it. I don't think you'd need more tubing just fibreglass.

Don't forget these are already on the option list:

High Performance Sports Core Engine Coolant Radiator
High Performance Sports Core Turbo Intercooler

Decat, those 2 and a remap. 8)
Atom 4, Clio v6, & some other cars obviously.

I've ticked those boxes at present but will double check before signing off on the final spec that they won't become superfluous for a potential future upgrade...

I can't really see what else is required in hardware terms as everything Ariel used is top notch and well thought out. It's not really like the engine is exactly cocooned either. I guess it's more a case of making sure that cold air is efficiently directed to where it needs to go.

Cheers,
Stu

Based on the 3.5 can you upgrade to R spec later or do they treat it as a separate model?
GR Yaris CP for when it rains, Atom 4 for when it doesn’t.

The stiffened chassis might not be so easily bolted on, but I think it can be done.

Also, V5 just says Ariel Atom.

Any 3.5 has the stiffer chassis, but from a 3 or earlier this is correct

Pretty certain the R has additional strengthening, on top of that, around the engine bay.

Proof will be around here somewhere...

Hmm, it has been sold as the v8/3.5r stiffer chassis, but possibly the R has some additional stiffnes like you say.

The 3.5R if fully upgraded from a 3 or 3.5 to the full 3.5R spec it has to be completely stripped back to the frame (engine out) and additional tubing welded into the engine bay before being re-powder coated - the engine bay ends up approximately 15% stiffer to accommodate the extra power more effectively.

At the same time SADEV mounting points can also be added (welded in) because retrofitting a SADEV is no small matter as the frame has to be further modified with extra bits here and there to accommodate it!

I rather suspect that there might be quite a good chance that the Atom 4 may well be similar so I would suggest that anyone seriously thinking of upgrading to a sequential box from the standard manual box should discuss with the factory having any extra mounting points required incorporated during the initial build process as this might reduce the subsequent sequential upgrade costs considerably?
