What is the recommended fuel octane to use?

Post by autobackup » Thu Nov 15, 2018 4:08 pm

I am curious to know, just generally, what grade of fuel do most use in their Ariel Atom or Nomad?

Does Ariel actually recommend the best octane to use?

In Cyprus I usually use 100 octane which is widely available on the Island (ECO Racing) - is this too high? Would it be better for the engine if I used a lower grade?

Yes, when I bought mine, I was told to put superunleaded in. Apparently it'll run on normal "but why would you?".

So I use whatever is nearest and easiest, from supermarket 97 upwards. But that's also UK RON, and I know other countries measure it differently.

I think I'd be worrying more about Ethanol content if I were you.

That said, as you posted, since you can wheely away, it's clearly not doing any damage to performance. As to longevity.. I doubt too higher a rating will cause a problem.

When I collected mine, Steve told me to use super and if I had to put in regular, to put octane booster in it. So as Phil said, I can't see 100 doing your Atom any harm, quite the reverse!

I thought we didn't trust supermarket petrol because it was made from rat's wee and gruel. Is that not a thing anymore?

Tesco's do the 99RON brew don't they. Does a RON or 2 matter - assuming that there's less horse meat in their petrol than their meatballs of course.

Lol, I’m not that fussy about my juice,

And yeah Tesco do good petrol, but the nearest is too far from me to consider.

Sainsbury’s, Shell or BP for me.

To be honest, I normally opt for somewhere that will also serve a bacon buttie and a latte.

Hhhhmmmm. Forecourt bacon butties...

I think I need the extra RON just to drag the extra weight away from the pump.

I have been told that Tesco 99 is 95 with BioEthanol added as a octane booster. Hence I avoid it!

I have seen test results and heard from some of the race fraternity that Shell V Power is the best of the supermarket petrols for POWER. >:D
Atom 4, Clio v6, & some other cars obviously.
