Heating

Post by phil4 » Mon Oct 08, 2018 11:43 am

As I was driving to the factory on Saturday, a little damp and chilly... I thought about what tends to occur during the summer.

When the engine temp gets about 95 or so, the fan comes on wafting warm air towards your feet.

Clearly on Saturday it was never going to get that high, no warm air wafting. And this led to my thinking:

- for such events wouldn't it be nice to have a fan override, that turned it on when wanted. Granted it would probably only be able to run for a short while, either time or down to a lower temp limit.... but better than nothing.
- what would the effect be on the coolant being say 10 degrees cooler? is this a no-no?

If viable I figured this could be added with little or no extra equipment/weight.

Now shoot me down :)

I wired my radiator fan with a toggle switch. I also left my radiator temperature sensor to turn the fan on automatically.
If somehow my radiator sensor goes bad while i'm in the road, I can also force the radiator fan to turn on without the mercy of the sensor.
I can turn the fan on anytime I want.

Thanks, that sounds like it's a gooer then.

As I'm a complete numpty when it comes to tech stuff, is there anything you think I should know, eg. 4 pins on the connector type stuff?

Thanks

Phil,

I reckon heated seats are the best option for an Atom or Nomad.

Russell did this in his Nomad which was both pretty easy to do and effective.

He used a cheap 12v car seat heater wire element stuck under the foam padding in his Nomad seats. With some neat wiring it looked pretty OEM tbh. A bit of warmth from the seat makes all the difference at all speeds too.

Definitely something to consider IMO. Air heating will only work at slow speed / stationary for obvious reasons.

Atom 4, Clio v6, & some other cars obviously.

I like the thinking... as it happens I remembered I'd bought some Keis gloves and jacket last year... so this may do for the time being :)

Hmmmm... Heated Seats and a Heated steering Wheel. An option box that I would tick. Part of the ‘Sommerset Winter Pack’, available from Easter of course.
