Mud guards / Fenders
Hi
Currently have ones that match colour of my car but considering changing to grey / black.
Where do you get these from, the factory and anyone know the cost? On the internet looks like skunkwax only ones that sell them !
Also, anyone know how to fit them, is it simple or a wheel off job ?
(Appreciate I could just wrap but one has some slight damage / tiny crack so thinking might just replace).
Thanks

Re: Mud guards / Fenders
It's not simple unfortunately- The actual guards are glued with some kind of epoxy to the metal support struts which as you can imagine is not an easy task.
I'm not sure exactly what adhesive product you'd need .. Tiger Seal has been mentioned in earlier posts
Tips on how to get the correct alignment when glueing the guard to the metal bracket :-
viewtopic.php?f=81&t=9208&p=185093
To remove the actual metal brackets from the car along with the attached and glued mudguard(s) requires the big allen screw removing from the wishbone and other suspension bolts depending on whether it's a front or rear wheel you're doing.
Apparently, so long as you don't adjust anything else, it's possible to put the bolts back without upsetting the car's geometry and alignment. Note that these are safety wired and will require torquing to the correct settings.

With the car jacked up and wheels off, you use a knife or similar to break the tiger seal that holds the mudguard onto the bracket (you'll see underneath where the bracket extends to.)
It's a time consuming job but eventually you can just pull the old mudguard off and slip the new one on.
Re-do the tiger seal (use loads) then using electrical tape, tape the mudguard to the correct height by running the tape from the 2 edges of the mudguard back onto the chassis rails. Putting the wheels back on will make getting the alignment part easy. Give it it a day to set and you're good to go.
Factory is the best source but Skunkwurx ones will work too. Only black or carbon available off the shelf but easy enough to get wrapped prior to putting them on.
Hope that is of some use.
Cheers,
Stu

Rather than spending c£1000-1500 on new ones, I'd just wrap them all, which will cost you c£150. You could always get the cracked one repaired first - they are only fibreglass.
If you do go new, they will almost certainly get cracked again, especially if you have sticky track day tyres which just love picking up stones...

Ah ok, thanks for this. Who repairs this sort of thing, just general fibreglass repair companies I assume ?
(In Essex if any recommendations !).
Sounds like wrapping could be best solution !

Anyone who does fibreglass repairs - be it automotive or marine. There seem to be quite a few options in Essex if you Google it.Rooney1000 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 23, 2021 2:09 pm Ah ok, thanks for this. Who repairs this sort of thing, just general fibreglass repair companies I assume ?

There are lots of options once you wrap them - be it satin, matt or gloss finish, carbon fibre look etc. You can also change your bonnet and air intake, and even design your own livery. Karl V had a different livery every season on his Nomad!

Wrap will cover the smaller cracks. With respect to preventing more cracks, I read on here somewhere, where an owner painted the underside of the mudguards with liquid rubber paint which helps prevent new cracks. Available at Screwfix, or others. Have wanted to do that also, but haven't go around to it yet
Re: Mud guards / Fenders
I can recommend the liquid rubber paint as it prevents star cracks from stones fired up from underneath. I also added some to the leading edge which also helped. Held up well over c28k miles.
If you are going to wrap then cracks are not too difficult to fix yourself, provided you use a dreamer to bring right through the cracked gellcoat and use flexible filler.

Re: Mud guards / Fenders
Had quote of £450 to wrap all 4, that seem high ? Not sure what others have paid.
Re: Mud guards / Fenders
That's stupidly expensive. If you get a qood quality wrap like a 3m it'll cost you around £30-40/m and you can wrap it yourself in about 15 mins each if that. The 3m and other premium material is easier to work with than the cheap stuff and breathable so any air bubbles come out easy.Rooney1000 wrote: ↑Fri Jun 25, 2021 9:43 am Had quote of £450 to wrap all 4, that seem high ? It's a very simple shape to wrap. Have a go yourself, what's the worse that can happen. You can do it without having to remove them off the car. All you need is the material, a squeegee and a hair dryer. And some edge sealant if you really want to do a through job.

What sort of 'Dreamer' would you recommend - a 'day dreamer' (humming along) or one of life's dreamers?

I still have the original Mud Guards/Fenders from my 2006 Atom 2 stored in the roof of my garage, from when I changed over to Fibreglass at the same time I had the very first Fibreglass Wings brought over from America into the UK fitted to replace the Aluminium Wings, which are also lying about in my Garage.
There may be a mark on one of the Rear Mud Guards, but as I haven't looked at them since I wrapped them up in November 2007, I can't really remember.
I'm in Liverpool by the way, and I'm sure I could part with them for a reasonable offer, as I've not needed them since they were removed.
