Koen had a factory bare chassis upgrade to the 3.5R spec .. I think it was discussed on Facebook at the time, not so much on here ..

Not with the Sadev !

This might be a stupid question, but what do you mean with 'bare chassis upgrade' (can't figure out if that is a good or a bad thing).

Also, "the Sadev gearbox": I don't think this is fitted, sadev is the sequential gaerbox if I am not mistaking? Koen's Car is a manual.

As I said, I am very new to the raceworld.

Yes, bare chassis suggests that ancillary components where necessary are removed from the chasssis to allow access and heat protection, welding/brazing and re-painting where applicable.

Sadev is the (expensive) sequential gearbox which this particular car doesn't have ..

I'm sure the factory will be willing to advise you of the work they carried out ..

I thought 3.5Rs were the base car, not an upgrade option for a 3.5. And I thought that the 3.5Rs were launched in 2013 - this is a 2011 plate.

Did it maybe all start with an upgrade option back in 2011, then became it's own 'model' as such later on?

Just curious...

I wouldn't read too much into that Excel option list, as you say in 2011, the 350R upgrade wasn't around - it looks like the ticks were added as an aid to sell it ..

From memory, I think Koen bought the car new from the factory as a 3.0 and some time later it got shipped back from Belgium to the factory to be updated to the 3.5R spec. Nothing sinister, he just wanted to upgrade it.

I have the 3.5 Excel configurator dated 2013 and the 3.5R upgrade isn't on it, it does however appear in the 2016 version that I have.

Ah OK. So it is a 2011 car, but 'upgraded' to a 3.5R later on, got it.

The 3 5R is the most powerful, most expensive, fully featured and competent variant/evolution of the 3.x series Atom ever built (bar the limited edition V8)

May have an Atom 4.5R or 4 V8?

Never say never - if there is a demand - particularly if the aero is effective.

With a 3 year wait list, I suspect they could easily sell an Atom 4 V8 run of say 25 Worldwide.

When we went for a service, Steve was expounding the virtues of upgrading to a 3.5R and how well the sadev gearbox lasted before rebuilds etc

I am a little hesitant:

either I go extreme and buy Koen's car...
either I want a roof and buy a Lotus Exige...
or I go cheap and go for a caterham...

As a 3.5R owner I would suggest that it's a choice between 'run of the mill' or something REALLY quick.

3.5R's are relatively rare - good one's even more so - unlike the alternatives you mentioned the depreciation of a 3.5R is usually virtually zero!

For the spec I personally think that the price asked is very competitive.

Not sure I'd call an Atom 3.5 s/s or 4 run of the mill!

But, if we upgrade, I'm looking forward to more left foot braking and better grip
