Somewhere way back in the depths of the forum is a guide on how to re-calibrate the fuel gauge, I think.
Mine has the older style gauge which counts in number of litres, not bars. It often fluctuates randomly by up to 10 litres! Though does seem more consistent as it approaches zero. However when the tank is full, the display says 38l, half full says 29l, quarter full says 10l and when it says zero there's still about 2l left...
Like others, I reset the mileometer and start looking around 160, panicking around 180 and driving ever more gently around 200 miles!!
