777_TYK. -It's actually for none of those...
It ducts clean air into the air intake, to further prevent (over the aluminium air box) dirt and water ingress in very muddy, / wet or very dusty conditions.
The cars (regardless of air box, or raised intake) have the same filter attached so air flow rate is the same.
The standard filter is in the engine bay and will filter mud, dust etc, for a limited time. Once it is saturated, water / dust can get through.
After a days 'off roading' you will need to remove, clean and re oil the filter. (Cleaner and oil is available from us here at Ariel, or from the ITG website).
The aluminium air box protect the filter, but the air is still drawn from inside the engine bay. This increases the time period you can spend in your 'mucky' environment.
The raised intake increases this time period further. It doesn't remove the need for cleaning, but vastly reduces it.
