Touch wood, I've not had a k20 gearbox failure though I've driven two atoms hard on track over 15 years, and given weight of the car, I suspect it just a bad box.
Worth checking the box on why it failed. You can go for straight cut etc for strength but I doubt it failed due to the box having too much power/torque.
If you've got to have the gearbox changed, why not go for paddle shift gearbox?
